The trail is relatively short, about 2/3 of a mile round trip. While the downhill portion is quicker, the return uphill climb can be challenging. Most hikers complete the round trip in approximately 15-20 minutes, though it can take longer if you stop to enjoy the scenery or the historical reservoir.
The trail is considered moderately difficult. It begins with a descent of about 200 feet in elevation over 1/3 of a mile, involving stone-step inclines and a forested path. The return trip is entirely uphill, making it more strenuous. While generally well-maintained, some sections might have overgrowth.
Due to the significant downhill descent and subsequent uphill return, the trail is rated as moderately difficult. While short, the elevation change and stone steps can be challenging for beginners or very young children. It's best suited for those with some hiking experience or families prepared for a strenuous climb back up.
The trail begins south of the Queen Wilhelmina State Park & Lodge at a set of stairs. Parking is available at the lodge, which is conveniently located at the trailhead.
The primary feature is the old stone reservoir at the base of the trail, which was part of the original 1898 hotel's water system. Just uphill from the reservoir, you'll find a spring once believed to have curative powers. During leaf-off seasons, you might catch glimpses of the Ouachita Mountains through the trees. The trailhead itself offers a great south-facing view from near the top of Rich Mountain.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Ouachita National Recreation Trail, the Walk-In Campsite Trail, and the Reservoir Trail. A walk-in primitive campsite is accessible via a spur off the Reservoir Trail.
Yes, the trail is dog-friendly. Dogs are generally welcome in Arkansas State Parks, but they must be kept on a leash at all times.
The trail offers changing sights throughout the seasons. Spring brings blossoms, while fall provides vibrant foliage, making these excellent times to visit. During the leaf-off season (late fall to early spring), you may get better long-range views of the Ouachita Mountains through the trees. The park is also known for frequent morning fog, which can create a unique atmosphere.
There are no entrance fees or permits required to access Queen Wilhelmina State Park or to hike the Queen Wilhelmina Reservoir Trail. The park is free to enter and enjoy.
Given the stone steps and elevation change, wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Dress in layers, as mountain weather can change quickly. Bring water, especially for the uphill return, and consider trekking poles for stability on the descent and ascent. Insect repellent might be useful during warmer months.
Yes, the trail starts right near the Queen Wilhelmina State Park & Lodge, which offers accommodation and dining facilities. This makes it convenient for visitors looking for a place to stay or eat before or after their hike.
