Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Pacific Crest Trail: CA Section L - Donner Summit to Highway 49?

This section of the PCT is rated as difficult. While some guidebooks describe it as easy to moderate, it still involves significant elevation changes, with an elevation gain of around 4,757 to 5,437 feet and an elevation loss of approximately 7,374 to 8,025 feet. Elevations range between 4,000 and 8,000 feet.

What is the best time of year to hike this section of the PCT?

The best time to hike this section is typically from late spring through early fall. Snow can persist at higher elevations into early summer, and weather conditions can change rapidly. Always check the forecast before you go.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The trail primarily traverses through the Tahoe National Forest. You'll encounter diverse landscapes including wildflower meadows, granite canyons, and pine forests. The southern part offers views across Donner Lake and Truckee. While some areas have open granite, the majority is forested with tall trees. Beyond Mount Lola, the trail descends into granite canyons and transitions to volcanic and pine forest areas.

Do I need a permit to hike the Pacific Crest Trail: CA Section L?

While a specific long-distance permit for the PCT is not always required for shorter section hikes, you will need a California Fire Permit if you plan on using a backpacking stove. This section is within the Tahoe National Forest, so be aware of any specific forest regulations or fire restrictions. Bear canisters are generally not required, but practicing bear-safe and Leave No Trace principles is essential.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

Yes, this section of the PCT is generally dog-friendly. However, always ensure your dog is under control, preferably on a leash, and follow all Leave No Trace principles, including packing out all waste. Be mindful of wildlife and other hikers.

Where can I park to access the trail, and are there public transport options?

The southern trailhead is accessible near Donner Summit (Highway I-80). Parking is available in the vicinity. The northern end is near Highway 49, close to Sierra City. Public transportation directly to the trailheads can be limited, so planning for shuttle services or personal vehicle drop-offs/pick-ups is often necessary.

What are some notable landmarks or scenic spots along the way?

You'll pass several interesting points, including the Historic Donner Summit and the Historic Donner Pass Summit ⛰️ Pacific Crest Trail crossing. Other highlights include George R. Stewart Peak, Castle Pass, and the Peter Grubb Hut (Sierra Club). You'll also encounter natural features like Lower Castle Creek and Unconformity Spring.

Are there reliable water sources along the trail?

Water sources are generally good in this section. However, be prepared for potential dry stretches, as a 14-mile water carry might be necessary at times. Always carry enough water for your planned hike and consider filtering or treating any water you collect from natural sources.

What amenities are available near the trail's ends?

At the northern end, Sierra City (near Highway 49) serves as a common resupply point for thru-hikers and offers amenities like restaurants, a general store, and a cold water spring. Near Donner Summit, you'll find some services and accommodations, though parts of the trail quickly move into quieter, forested areas away from traffic noise.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, while the route is primarily the PCT - California Section L, it briefly intersects with other paths such as Hole in the Ground and the Donner Lake Rim Trail.

Is this section suitable for a shorter backpacking trip or a 'mini-PCT' experience?

Absolutely. At approximately 37 to 38.4 miles, this is one of the PCT's shorter sections, making it a popular choice for those seeking a 'mini-PCT experience' without committing to a full thru-hike. It's well-suited for section hikers and backpackers looking for a rewarding multi-day trip.

Trail Reviews

Caro "Bandit"
July 7, 2022, PCT Day 70 - Mile 1.160,8 to 1.187

Today feels like a relaxed hiking day. The numbers say something else, because there are more than 1,100 meters of altitude difference today. Nevertheless, we are absolutely motivated and scrub 43 kilometers. 😎 The landscape is slowly changing more and more into a volcanic paradise. Many Mule's Ears light up the hills with their yellow flowers. It's just beautiful. Today we only see the wonderfully glowing lakes from afar. But that's okay. There are sure to be more.
