This trail is generally considered moderate. While the initial section through the forest to Lake Eleanor is a moderate climb, the trail gains elevation more aggressively after the lake, with some steep sections and rolling hills. It's a rewarding hike for those with a reasonable fitness level.
The full round trip to Grand Park and back is approximately 8.1 to 9 miles. Based on an average hiking pace, it typically takes around 2 hours and 6 minutes of moving time, but plan for longer to enjoy the scenery, making it a good half-day to full-day excursion.
The trail offers diverse beauty. You'll start in a shaded forest, pass by the quiet Lake Eleanor, and then ascend through meadows offering initial glimpses of Mount Rainier. The main highlight is Grand Park, a vast meadow at 5,600 feet, providing world-class views of Mount Rainier, including the Winthrop Glacier and Willis Wall, as well as Skyscraper Mountain and Fremont. During mid-July to mid-August, the park is an 'ocean of wildflowers', and in mid to late September, the meadows turn a striking red.
The trail is generally recommended from July to October. Mid-July through mid-August is ideal for experiencing the vibrant wildflower displays in Grand Park. For stunning red meadows, plan your visit for mid to late September. Be aware that mosquitoes and flies can be prevalent in early summer during the wildflower bloom.
Parking is available roadside or in a small lot near the trailhead. Please note that the 10-mile forest road (FR 73) leading to the trailhead can be rough, with potholes and rocky sections, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended for access.
Yes, as this trail is located within Mount Rainier National Park, you will need to pay the park entrance fee. Additionally, a Northwest Forest Pass is required for parking at the trailhead. You can find more information on fees and passes on the official park website.
No, dogs are generally not permitted on trails within Mount Rainier National Park, including the Grand Park via Lake Eleanor Trail, to protect wildlife and natural resources. Leashed dogs are typically only allowed in developed areas, on paved roads, and in campgrounds.
For this moderate hike, bring plenty of water, snacks, and layers of clothing as weather can change. Given the potential for bugs, especially in early summer, insect repellent is highly recommended. Don't forget your camera for the incredible views of Mount Rainier!
Yes, when higher elevation roads close for winter, this trail can remain a viable option for snowshoeing or winter camping. However, be prepared for potentially icy sections on the access road and ensure you have appropriate winter gear and experience.
Yes, the route primarily follows the Grand Ridge via Lake Eleanor and Lake Eleanor Trail. It also briefly touches sections of the Northern Loop Trail.
This trail offers a significantly easier and shorter 'backdoor' approach to Grand Park compared to other more challenging routes, such as the one from Sunrise. This makes the stunning views and expansive meadows of Grand Park more accessible for day hikers who might not tackle the more arduous options.
