Hiking

The Eagle Falls Trail offers a truly spectacular journey through some of the Lake Tahoe Basin's most iconic landscapes. You'll start with a relatively easy ascent, quickly encountering the beautiful Upper Eagle Falls, then continue upwards on charming stone stairs and over smooth granite slabs. The path winds through forested areas, treating you to panoramic views of Emerald Bay and Lake Tahoe before reaching the serene Eagle Lake, nestled among granite peaks with glassy waters reflecting the stunning mountain scenery.

This moderate hike covers 2.6 miles (4.2 km) with 1630 feet (497 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 1 hours and 40 minutes. The parking lot near Highway 89 fills up fast, especially during peak times, so an early morning start or a visit during the shoulder seasons is highly recommended to avoid the rush. If your plans include venturing further into the Desolation Wilderness beyond Eagle Lake, remember that a permit is required.

What makes the Eagle Falls Trail so notable is its significant scenic reward for a relatively short effort, combining a powerful alpine waterfall with a picturesque glacial lake. It serves as a popular gateway to the vast Desolation Wilderness, drawing hikers who appreciate its accessible yet varied terrain and the majestic views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's a fantastic option for those looking for a rewarding day hike in the Lake Tahoe area.

The main route, which is about 4.2 km (2.6 miles) roundtrip to Eagle Lake, generally takes around 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete. However, the total time can vary depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the views at the waterfalls and Eagle Lake.

What is the terrain like on the trail?

The terrain varies significantly. You'll encounter sections with lovely stone stairs cut into rock walls, as well as uneven ground with sharp and jagged rocks, especially as you ascend. It's best for beginners to stick to the falls section.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

The trail offers numerous highlights. You'll start near the Eagle Falls Trailhead and View of Emerald Bay, then encounter the impressive Upper Eagle Falls. Continuing on, you'll be treated to a View of Eagle Lake, a picturesque glacial lake, and enjoy Stunning Mountain Scenery throughout.

When is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The falls are best viewed in May or June when snowmelt is at its peak, providing the most dramatic cascades. Visiting during sunrise is also recommended for a golden glow over the waterfall and fewer crowds. While popular year-round, be prepared for snow and ice in winter months.

Where can I park, and how can I ensure access to the trailhead?

Parking is available near the trailhead, but it's extremely popular. Parking lots fill up very quickly, especially during peak season. To ensure you find a spot and avoid crowds, it's highly recommended to arrive early in the morning.

Do I need a permit to hike the Eagle Falls Trail?
