Cycling

This varied route connects the towns of Bedburg and Elsdorf. Ideally, you start at Bedburg train station and cycle from there to the Renaissance castle with its expansive park. Afterwards, you continue to the historic Alt-Kaster, where half-timbered houses, narrow lanes, and the adjacent Kasterer Forest await you.

The route then leads through a rural and tranquil landscape to Elsdorf. There, you'll find impressive viewpoints on the edge of the Hambach open-cast mine, for example, at the Forum :terra nova (a short detour is necessary). From the large platform, you can look down into the pit, which is up to 400 meters deep, with its gigantic bucket-wheel excavators.

On the return journey, you cycle through the picturesque village of Paffendorf to the castle of the same name. Completely surrounded by moats, the complex dates back to the 13th century and houses a brasserie that invites you to enjoy coffee and cake. Afterwards, you cycle back to Bedburg along the Erft River.

Numbered junctions for cycling: 15 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 18 - 17 - 14 - 13 - 15

Simply note the numbers on the handy junction tag, available from Radregion Rheinland e.V., attach it to your handlebars, and you're ready to go.

Tip: Using the overview maps at the junctions, you can easily replan your tour and flexibly shorten or lengthen it as you go. You can learn how the system works in the Radregion Rheinland's explanatory video. With Komoot's cycling-specific map view, you can display additional junctions on the komoot map. Bedburg Castle

Highlight • Castle

In the 16th century, Count Werner von Salm-Reifferscheid had the castle rebuilt in the Renaissance style. In 1839, the Rhenish Knighthood acquired the property and used it as a knights' academy. Following extensive restoration in the 1980s, the most recent renovation took place in 2008. The glass-roofed arcaded courtyard in the style of the Italian Early Renaissance is particularly noteworthy. Today, the elegant rooms serve as a venue for cultural events, conferences, and private celebrations. The moated castle is especially popular as a romantic wedding location.

Forum :terra nova

Highlight • Viewpoint

The :terra nova forum at the Hambach open-cast mine in Elsdorf offers a barrier-free viewing platform with a wooden walkway and information boards, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view into the 400-meter-deep pit with its gigantic bucket-wheel excavators. Inside the building, a stylish restaurant with a bar, regional cuisine, and an outdoor terrace offering a direct view of the pit beckons. It is ideal for brunch, coffee, or events. Parking is free, and there is also a connection to cycle paths such as the :terra nova Speedway circuit.

Due to construction work related to the Rhine water transport pipeline, the entire :terra nova Speedway will be closed until approximately the end of 2027 and cannot be ridden. Diversions are signposted. The construction site can be bypassed over a wide area from Elsdorf (junction 18) via Paffendorf (junction 14) and the glider airfield (junction 19) to Niederaußem (junction 7).
