Hiking

Starting in the village of Schleitheim, this circular route takes you directly into the diverse landscape of the Klettgau region. After just a few minutes, the view opens up across expansive fields to the peaks of the Randen hills.

A unique piece of history awaits you along the way at the Gypsum Museum. Here you'll find the only accessible gypsum mine in Switzerland. On select days, you can take a small train into the tunnel and learn more about gypsum mining in centuries past.

The trail continues along the renaturalized Wutach River towards Seldenhalde. In spring, countless snowdrops transform the slopes into a delicate white. Quiet stretches of forest alternate with open sections, and small rest areas invite you to linger. Upon reaching the top of Staufenberg, you'll find a lovely spot for a break with a view and a barbecue area.

Back in Schleitheim, the Schlaatemerbach stream accompanies you through the village. A varied circular hike combining nature, history, and plenty of springtime atmosphere.

Trail Reviews

Yvonne
March 8, 2025, Weitergehen- Weizen, Staufenberg, Seldenhalde

I stole this round from @Barbara & 🐾. Thank you very much! The view of snowdrops and cup mushrooms on the Wutach and the sunny views from Staufenberg sound tempting. The car park at the museum railway in Weizen takes the car and I reach the German/Swiss border via the Wizemer Steg. The hiking trail takes me directly along the Wutach on the Swiss side. The success of the renaturation measures that have been carried out can be clearly seen here, which are much more recent on the German side of the Wutach and have yet to develop into a naturally grown landscape. https://rp.baden-wuerttemberg.de/rpf/service/presse/pressemitteilungen/artikel/renaturierung-der-wutach-bei-stuehlingen-weizen-kreis-waldshut-im-zeitplan/ Morning cold is coming up from the Wutach and the paths are often still deeply shaded. So I quickly leave this stretch of the path behind me today. I reach the entrance to Stühlingen and let the path that climbs up into the forest lead me onto the sunny Rebhaldenweg. The Randen and the village of Schleitheim come into view. With beautiful views over the sunny, wide plateau, the path leads slightly uphill to the top of the Staufenberg. A nice place to take a break with a barbecue area and a panoramic view. After a break, we head downhill from the Staufenberg through the forest and the Seldengraben, a deep forest gorge that then leads us back down to the Wutach. Here I come across the long-awaited March snowflakes and the spectacular-looking cup fungi. The Seldenhalde, where this natural spectacle takes place, is designated as a nature reserve and offers not only botanical discoveries but also a wild and impressive landscape. Soon we reach the Wizemer Steg again and the little bridge takes me back to the German side.

Since I'm afraid that the Wutachflühen rock path near Fützen won't be accessible after all the rain, I've decided to explore the Seldenhalde nature reserve downstream from the Wutach on the Swiss side this year. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturschutzgebiet_Seldenhalde It starts in Weizen at the Sauschwänzlebahn train station, where everything is still in hibernation. I enter Switzerland quite unspectacularly via the Wiizemer Bridge. The forest path directly on the Wutach is not accessible, after a short stretch I give up before the dead wood lying across the way and the water-swamp pool. However, the path a little above is also a pretty forest path and after a short time I discover the first bright red cuplets and a little later the huge number of March cups. They rush down the slopes, spring up between deadwood trunks, yes, they even hang on the rootstocks of fallen trees and continue to bloom undaunted! Splendid! https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scharlachroter_Kelchbecherling https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fr%C3%BChlingsknotblume Finally I climb up the Seldengraben, at the edge of a deep, very wild gorge that can hardly be adequately shown in the photos. Now I leave the lavish abundance of the Becherle behind me and walk along a limestone forest path to the Laendlihütte. Then I continue walking over the Staufenberg with a great view of the idyllic region around Schleitheim. Then I leave the forest and head along grassy paths over the ridge of the Lendenberg. Instead of vineyards like in the past, there are fields here, there is a cold wind whistling, but I constantly see Oberlupfen Castle in Stühlingen in my sights and in one place there is even a view of the Alps. Down to the Müliweg and past the vineyard with gnarled old vines, a serpentine path down to Oberwiesen. The plaster museum is still in hibernation and I continue along a factory hall to the beautiful alluvial forest path on the Wutach. https://www.museum-schleitheim.ch/gipsmuseum.htm The riparian forest is wild, the path is partly wet, partly crumbling, but beautiful. Beavers have already settled here! CONCLUSION: A wonderful round, especially during the March cup blossom! The path through the Seldenhalde, the way back along the Wutach, but also the (wide) path over the Staufenberg inspire with its beautiful views! Certainly highly recommended at other times of the year too! I found this post from 2021 with the almost identical route and a nice video. The thick tree had already been gnawed by the beaver, but so far he hasn't been able to cut the tree down! https://www.pm-schlaate.info/blog/2021/02/22/zu-den-maerzengloeckchen-in-der-seldenhalde-schleitheim/

I already walked this route a year ago to see the March lilies bloom. https://www.komoot.de/tour/1447974594?ref=aso Because I liked it so much, I'm repeating it today as a family route, this time in the opposite direction, to catch the lilies in the afternoon with some sun. So after crossing the Wiizemer Steg on the Swiss side, we walk the beautiful path directly along the Wutach to the level of Stühlingen. Now we continue on a beautiful path, where sky-blue liverworts shine at me, steeply up to the Rebhaldenweg. With a view of Schleitheim, the idyllic valley and behind it the Hagen with its unmistakable tower, we now walk north, past a replanted vineyard, a reminder of a time when a lot of wine was grown here - it was a long time ago! We watch a red kite that settles on a dead tree and calls out quietly until its partner comes flying over and we become witnesses at a kite wedding. However, after a few seconds it is all over... Then we climb up to the top and walk through the fields, from which the green grain is already poking out. Finally, a final climb up the Staufenberg. The spacious "Brätliplatz" on the hill is perfect for a snack in the already quite warm March sun. From there it is not far to the Ländlihütte and from there a long stretch through the forest on a limestone forest path. We almost miss the turnoff at the Seldengraben, the path is a bit battered by forestry at the turnoff. After a few meters, however, a beautiful path leads us steeply down. To our right, the abyss of the really impressive Seldengraben yawns and soon the first white patches of March lilies appear! Now the most beautiful part follows back to the Wiizemer Steg: the cup mushrooms are at their optimal flowering time and have large hoop skirts, they settle on the slopes, in depressions, between ivy and mossy dead wood. There are also lots of red cup mushrooms there, there are many more than a year ago! Simply wonderful, this splendor of white cup mushrooms, red bowls and a green and brown patterned "tablecloth"! CONCLUSION: a beautiful little walk, especially beautiful now when the March cup mushrooms are in bloom, but certainly highly recommended at other times of the year too. During the cup mushrooms' bloom at the weekend it is sure to be quite busy, especially in the afternoon when the sun is out, and today there were also many walkers on the Seldenhalde.

Today we were actually supposed to go to the Wutachflühen, but after a short distance we stopped the hike due to the muddy paths. So this tour that I saw here on Komoot a few days ago came to fruition... Overall, a nice tour that is easy to walk even in the current path conditions. March cups and chalice cups en masse along the way and beautiful wooden sculptures on the renatured Wutach bank 👍🏻 The tour will definitely be repeated!

Open account? What account? Exactly a year ago, I (Cornelia) planned this little hike near us. I came across a narrow path near Schleitheim and planned a loop. The short, somewhat steep climb at the beginning proved too demanding for my state of health last year and so I had to cancel and postpone the tour with a rumbling 😡😡 in my heart. Today (after surgery and rehab in the spring) the time had come and we set off again. At the car park near the gypsum mill, we turned straight into the forest and then onto the still short, steep 😆 path. (This time without any problems). Since the sun was shining here today, we had a beautiful view down into the valley to Schleitheim and the Randen opposite. At the "Trubehütte", a barrel vault in the vineyards, you could read that the grape keepers guarded the grapes in such huts during the ripening period and slept there. We were only a few steps away from the highest point of our tour, the Staufenberg. Up here, too, we were rewarded with a great view. On the Staufenberg there is a beautiful rest area with various fireplaces and a small shelter where kindling and fuel is available (this is not uncommon at Swiss rest areas - a great idea). Past the next rest area, the Laendihütte, the path led us into the "Seldenhalde" protected forest. Here we crossed the border at a depression and climbed down towards the valley on the German side. Then a narrow footbridge followed and we were back on Swiss soil. The rushing of the Wutach 💧 and the rustling of the leaves 🍂🍂🍂 under our feet accompanied us to the Wiizemer Steg. Since it was already late and we still had an appointment waiting, we decided to take the boring direct route rather than the paths along the renaturalized Wutach.
