Hiking

Discover one of the most iconic hikes in the Ottawa area. Located in the city's greenbelt, it offers insights into the unique ecosystem of the Mer Bleue Bog. The Mer Bleue is so named after the effect caused by the sun breaking through the morning mist that covers the wetland. This creates a vivid blue reflection that gives the impression of looking at the sea.

The route is a boardwalk loop that allows an intimate acquaintance with the Mer Bleue’s natural beauty. Formed by glaciers that covered it 12,000 years ago, the weight of the ice caused the Earth's crust to sink, allowing the ocean to advance and flooding the region for some time. The retreat of the glaciers saw this sea gradually recede, leaving a lake of stagnant water fed only by precipitation and groundwater.

Today, it’s one of the largest peat bogs in southern Ontario, home to mosses, grasses, small shrubs and a variety of wildlife exquisitely adapted to this wetland environment. Perfectly laid out and wonderfully accessible, the trail features interpretive panels that explain the natural history of the site and its ecological characteristics.
