San Bartolomeo in Galdo and the sheep tracks of Alto Sannio

This loop takes you on an exploration of the rural world of Alto Sannio along the area's historic sheep tracks, starting from San Bartolomeo in Galdo, a village perched above the Fortore Valley. Leaving the town behind, you're immediately immersed in an open landscape of fields, pastures, and scattered farms: a typical landscape of the Benevento Apennines, where the countryside is still marked by the slow rhythm of transhumance.

Pedaling toward the plateau, you reach the Lucera–Castel di Sangro sheep track, one of the great historic sheep tracks of central and southern Italy. Here, the route marks the border between Campania and Puglia, and still retains the broad grassy line that for centuries guided flocks, shepherds, and trade.

The route continues along small country roads and farm tracks, with open views of the hills and the Fortore plateau. Before returning to San Bartolomeo, a steady climb awaits you: once you reach the main road, you can choose to return directly to the village or extend the route by climbing towards the Sanctuary of the Madonna Incoronata, a place of rural devotion immersed in a peaceful and panoramic setting.

From the sanctuary, you descend again towards the sheep track, which you'll find again further ahead to complete the loop and return to San Bartolomeo in Galdo, with the last few kilometers passing through rolling hills and cultivated fields.
