Cycling

From Filignano, a small village in Molise and gateway to the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park, set out to discover a region where wild nature and history intertwine. A gentle initial climb becomes increasingly challenging, leading you to Valle di Filignano, where some fun singletrack through the fields, descending slightly, opens the door to adventure.

The route then climbs between Monte della Battuta and Monte Pantano on trails and an exciting dirt road that will test your technical skills. Returning to asphalt at Cerasuolo, you cross the Rio Chiaro to climb to Croce delle Vicenne and descend again towards Mennella. Here, your gaze falls on the castle of the same name, an ancient early medieval castrum whose walls strategically controlled the Volturno Valley, a silent witness to centuries of Molise history.

The loop concludes by passing through Selvone, a hamlet of Filignano dominated by the Church of SS. An 18th-century crucifix, perched at the highest point of the historic center. This return journey through valleys, villages, and historical sites leaves you with the feeling of having traveled not only through space, but also through the profound time of Upper Molise.

Vista del castello di Mennella

Highlight • Viewpoint

Mennella Castle is an ancient castrum (fortress) located in the "Le Mura" area of Filignano, in the Volturno Valley, in Upper Molise. It is a fortified hilltop settlement of early medieval origin, with likely earlier roots, recognizable today through the remains of walls, a tower, and structures uncovered during archaeological excavations conducted between the late 1990s and early 2000s. The site served a strategic purpose in controlling the valley's transit routes and represents one of the most significant examples of the system of castles and walled villages in the County of Molise.
