This short loop, with a significant elevation gain, allows you to explore the most iconic views of the Val d'Orcia. Keep in mind that the climbs are steep and the terrain is mixed, with sections that may become muddy after rain. You can choose to ride the circuit in either direction for a varied challenge.
The adventure begins from the parking lot in Bagno Vignoni, the village famous for its main square: an ancient steaming thermal bath. You immediately head onto a gravel and wooded path along the Onzola stream. This initial stretch warms you up for the first climb: you emerge from the forest and tackle a fast, steep climb through the fields.
The panorama opens majestically, offering your first glimpses of the valley's sculpted hills. You then reach the paved road that, with curves and ups and downs, leads you to Castiglione d'Orcia. Here you can take a well-deserved break and stroll through the narrow medieval streets of the perched village.
The route descends toward the Orcia River, which you cross on a grassy and dirt road with a few ups and downs, preparing you for the last great challenge: a final climb of about five kilometers. Once you reach the summit, the view opens up 360 degrees across the entire Val d'Orcia.
The trail takes you to San Quirico d'Orcia, a historic stop on the Via Francigena, perfect for a final stop. From there, a winding descent through the fields reveals the famous scene of isolated cypress trees, like a Tuscan painting, before returning you to the starting point.
