Newfoundland is a land of storytellers. And so there is the whale story for my last hike today: I, the great whale of the Atlantic, woke up early this morning and heard the silent weeping of this German woman. She had never seen any wild animals on her vacation in our wonderful Newfoundland. Also today she stood in the Ocean Science Center and wistfully told my friends, the seals, that her vacation was almost over and she hadn't seen a whale yet... My friend the seal went on to tell me that this wistful woman was about to embark on the Sugarloaf Path. As was a group of young girls who had also not yet encountered a whale. And so I accompanied the four, initially unobserved by them. The girls took frequent breaks, the woman was a little slower, and so they soon met and talked about whales. One of the girls wanted to bite the others and cried: "Oh, a whale!" and everyone laughed. But that's when I felt it was time to finally make my presence known and showed up, exactly where the girl had pointed. And so all four shouted at the same time: "oh, my God, there's the whale!!!" I gave them a good 30 seconds to marvel and take pictures, but so that they don't fall off the cliff - it got windy enough later - I thought it would be better to say goodbye to the depths again. I can still feel the devotion of the four women on top of the cliff and I know that they will never forget this moment, because only we whales know the secret of our magic... 🐳😻🐳
