Sugarloaf Path

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

One of the most dramatic sections of Newfoundland’s East Coast Trail, the Sugarloaf Path climbs from the sheltered harbour of Quidi Vidi to high coastal cliffs overlooking the Atlantic. The route is steep in places, with stair sections, rocky footing, and sharp elevation changes, but the viewpoints make it a standout hike — you’ll get sweeping ocean horizons, rugged headlands, and clear views back toward Signal Hill and St. John’s Narrows. It’s a challenging but rewarding trail, best tackled with good footwear and plenty of time for the lookouts.

Quidi Vidi Village

Highlight • Settlement

Tucked into a narrow harbour on the edge of St. John’s, Quidi Vidi Village blends rugged coastal scenery with classic outport character. Weathered fishing stages, steep lanes and colourful saltbox houses give the area its charm, while craft studios and harbour lookouts make it easy to explore on foot. The village is also home to Quidi Vidi Brewing Company, set right on the water and known for its scenic taproom views. Quietest in the early morning, it’s one of the most atmospheric heritage pockets in the city with quick access to the Sugarloaf Path.

Chris Walk
June 28, 2022, 🇨🇦 Storytelling of a whale🐳❤️🐋 - East Coast Trail - Sugarloaf Path mit 1/2 Quidi Vidi Lake Trail

Newfoundland is a land of storytellers. And so there is the whale story for my last hike today: I, the great whale of the Atlantic, woke up early this morning and heard the silent weeping of this German woman. She had never seen any wild animals on her vacation in our wonderful Newfoundland. Also today she stood in the Ocean Science Center and wistfully told my friends, the seals, that her vacation was almost over and she hadn't seen a whale yet... My friend the seal went on to tell me that this wistful woman was about to embark on the Sugarloaf Path. As was a group of young girls who had also not yet encountered a whale. And so I accompanied the four, initially unobserved by them. The girls took frequent breaks, the woman was a little slower, and so they soon met and talked about whales. One of the girls wanted to bite the others and cried: "Oh, a whale!" and everyone laughed. But that's when I felt it was time to finally make my presence known and showed up, exactly where the girl had pointed. And so all four shouted at the same time: "oh, my God, there's the whale!!!" I gave them a good 30 seconds to marvel and take pictures, but so that they don't fall off the cliff - it got windy enough later - I thought it would be better to say goodbye to the depths again. I can still feel the devotion of the four women on top of the cliff and I know that they will never forget this moment, because only we whales know the secret of our magic... 🐳😻🐳
