Umbria Green Route from Montecchio

Cycling

This long circular route takes you through an area of great historical and artistic interest: Etruscan necropolises, thriving Roman towns, imposing Gothic churches, and small medieval villages.

Start this tour from the city of Orvieto, which you can reach by taking the funicular from the train station. Pedal through the hills surrounding Lake Corbara and reach the quaint village of Civitella del Lago. Here, take a break at the Belvedere to enjoy the extraordinary landscape created by the artificial dam of the Tiber River: rolling hills, blue waters, and terraced olive groves create a relaxing atmosphere. Civitella del Lago is a good option for a one-night stay and to split the itinerary over two days.

The next stop is the small village of Melezzole, whose narrow cobblestone streets transport you back in time. But the wonders don't end there, as you pass through the villages of Montecchio and then Baschi, both valuable medieval villages. With a short climb you reach the tuff cliff of Orvieto and end the ride with a good glass of Orvieto Classico DOC wine accompanied by typical Orvieto snails.

Civitella del Lago is of Roman origin, as attested by Pliny the Younger. Perched like many other villages in the area, in a dominant position, in the Middle Ages it was a defensive stronghold of Todi. Ruled from the XII century. from the Fredi family, in the 16th century it passed under the Atti family who governed it in the following period. In 1810 it took the name of Civitella dei Pazzi, apparently due to a presence of the famous Florentine family, antagonist of the Medici. After the construction of the Corbara dam and the homonymous lake, it took the current name of Civitella del Lago. The panorama that can be enjoyed extends up to Mount Argentario. Worth seeing is the Ovo Pinto Museum which, based on the Easter peasant tradition, collects eggs painted by artists from all over the world.

Melezzole Village

Highlight • Settlement

Village that develops around an ancient medieval castle (XIII century). On the top stands the bell tower of the church of San Biagio located in the central square, reachable through narrow stairways that break the concentric rings of the ancient walls, creating suggestive slits from which you can see the forest landscape below. Located at 610 meters high, it has a single main access through an ancient tower, well preserved, where the effigy of an eagle stands out to testify to the long dominion exercised on the village by nearby Todi. In the village there is a bar, a butcher (km0), a minimarket, an electrical and household items shop, a flower shop. There is a fountain for fresh water supplies right inside the tower.

Historic town center of Baschi

Highlight • Historical Site

Baschi is a quaint village in the province of Terni. The historic center still retains its ancient medieval charm, with vaulted ceilings and narrow alleys so small they're called "holes" by locals. Outside the medieval area lies the more modern part of town, where shops and accommodations can be found.
