This route was planned by komoot.
The main Forts' Trail is generally considered easy, suitable for all ages and fitness levels due to minimal elevation changes. However, a variant that includes the Mouth of the Adda and Forte di Fuentes is classified as moderate.
The estimated walking time for the trail is around 2 to 2.5 hours, not including any time spent visiting the forts or other attractions along the way.
You will encounter a variety of accessible paths, including cart tracks, mule tracks, and asphalted sections. The route also features walks along the waterfront, through charming woods and reeds, and alongside a cycle path.
The trail connects two significant Spanish fortresses: Forte di Fuentes, a 17th-century ruin, and Forte Montecchio Nord, a well-preserved World War I fortress. You'll also find expansive panoramic views of the Upper Lake Como, the Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve, Lake Mezzola, the mouth of the Adda River, and the majestic Monte Legnone. Other points of interest include the Montecchio Nord Garden, a Narrow Alleyway in a Mountain Village, and the View of the Valchiavenna Mountains.
While specific parking locations are not detailed, the trail starts from Colico. Look for public parking options in Colico near the trailhead, especially if you plan to start your hike there.
Colico is accessible by public transport, including train services, which can bring you close to the starting point of the trail. Check local transport schedules for the most convenient options.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, always ensure your dog is on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or other hikers, and be mindful of local regulations.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Forts' Trail itself. However, guided tours or entry to the forts (Forte di Fuentes and Forte Montecchio Nord) may have separate fees.
The trail can be enjoyed throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery. Summer can be warm, but the waterfront sections provide some relief. Winter hiking is possible, but check weather conditions for ice or snow, especially on higher sections.
Yes, you'll find amenities in Colico at the start of the trail. Along the route, there are farms and riding stables, and you might pass by places like Agriturismo Il Castagno, offering opportunities for refreshments.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Ciclabile della Valchiavenna, Sentiero Valtellina, Sentiero dei Torrenti, Piona - Colico, Via Erbiola, Via Adda, Parco Paride Cariboni, and Via Montecchio Nord.
Today we were allowed to hike through nature in wonderful spring-like weather to Forte Montecchio Nord. A visit to the fort reveals that fortunately the fort and its facilities have never really been needed. Then we hiked through a beautiful piece of forest, through a place with many old stone houses and some renovated buildings, followed the path past a horse farm, where you can go horseback riding in groups, to the Forte dei Fuentes or the walls that are left of it . We enjoyed the beautiful wide view to the lakes and the still slightly snow-covered mountains in the background. Life is Beautiful.
Fort Montecchio Nord and Fuentes in Colico were both closed. :(
