This route was planned by komoot.
The trail originates in Premana, Italy. While specific parking details aren't provided, Premana serves as the main access point. Given its popularity, especially during events, it's advisable to check local information for designated hiker parking areas or public transport options to the trailhead.
The provided information does not explicitly state whether the Giir di Mont Trail is dog-friendly. Given the challenging terrain and significant elevation changes, it's recommended to assess your dog's fitness and check local regulations regarding pets on alpine paths in the Lombardy Alps before bringing them along.
The Giir di Mont Trail is best hiked during the warmer months, typically from late spring to early autumn, when the alpine pastures are accessible and free of snow. Summer offers vibrant scenery, but be prepared for varying weather conditions at altitude. Always check local weather forecasts before heading out.
There is no mention of required permits or entrance fees for hiking the Giir di Mont Trail outside of organized race events. However, it's always a good practice to verify with local tourism offices in Premana for any updated regulations or specific requirements before your visit.
The terrain is diverse and challenging, featuring a mix of mule tracks and mountain paths. You'll encounter significant elevation changes, including steep ascents and descents, winding through forests and traditional alpine pastures. Sure-footedness and sturdy hiking shoes are essential.
The trail offers spectacular views and passes through several traditional alpine pastures. You'll find highlights such as Alpe Barconcelli, Alpe Artino, and the Rifugio Casera Vecchia di Varrone. Don't miss the View of Alpe Casarsa and Forno di Sotto e Sopra Villages and Shrine of Alessandro Stazzalecchi, the Picnic Area With View of the Waterfall, and the stunning View of Premana.
Yes, while the full Giir di Mont Trail is highly difficult, shorter variations exist. These include an 18 km course with 1,100 meters of elevation gain and a 9 km uphill race with 1,050 meters of climbing. These options avoid some of the most challenging sections, such as the demanding ascent to Bocchetta Larecc, making them more accessible for those seeking a less arduous experience.
Yes, the route intersects with several other official trails. You'll find sections that overlap with the Dorsale Orobica Lecchese (percorso basso), Alta Via della Valsassina - Tappa 2, Alta Via della Valsassina - Tappa 3, and various segments of the Sentiero d'Artino.
This trail is notable for its historical significance as one of the very first skyruns, conceived in 1961 to connect twelve alpine pastures. It has evolved into a major international mountain running event, attracting top athletes and hosting World Cup stages, and is deeply ingrained in the local community of Premana.
The Giir di Mont Trail is considered highly difficult, even for experienced hikers. It requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes due to its significant length, considerable elevation changes (up to 2,700 meters of gain), and challenging sections like the 800-meter climb to Bocchetta Larecc over just 3 kilometers.
Yes, the trail passes by several alpine huts and facilities. You'll find the Alpe Artino and the Rifugio Casera Vecchia di Varrone. There's also a Picnic Area With View of the Waterfall, offering a nice spot to rest and enjoy the scenery.
From Premana, around the pastures and huts (Ariale - Chiarino - Barconcelli - Artino - Varrone - Vegessa - Forni - Giabi) partially following the "giir di mont" route.

I'm truly thrilled to be back in the upper Valvarrone, especially since it's my very first time at the Casera Vecchia refuge using crampons. I reached it from Giabbio di Premana, following the Via del Ferro dirt road. This road was built in the 18th century, during the Austrian rule in northern Italy, to transport ferrous materials from the mines to the smelting furnaces at the Forni di Sotto and Forni di Sopra alpine pastures in Valvarrone. The recording stopped about 5 km in. A fantastic day!
