This trail is rated as difficult. You can expect a varied landscape, starting on a dirt road before transitioning to a beautiful mule track. It winds through coniferous forests, past rhododendrons and blueberries, and across alpine pastures. Higher sections, especially near the Forca gorge, can be more rugged and rocky, with some scree slopes. Sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and alpine experience are recommended.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

The trail is renowned for its 'alpine lake-hopping' experience. You'll discover several pristine lakes, including the Lower Frudière Lake and Lago di Frudière Superiore. Other notable features include the Lago Grande, the Colle di Frudiere offering panoramic views, and sections with wild pink flowers and old ruins.

Is the Frudière Lakes Trail (Route 9) dog-friendly?

The trail is generally considered dog-friendly, but it's crucial to keep your dog on a leash, especially in alpine pastures where livestock may be present, and to protect local wildlife. Given the difficult rating and rugged terrain in parts, ensure your dog is fit for a challenging hike.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The best time to hike the Frudière Lakes Trail is typically from late spring to early autumn. In spring, you'll see vibrant rhododendrons and other wildflowers. Autumn offers beautiful colors. Always check local weather conditions, as alpine weather can change rapidly, and snow can persist at higher elevations into early summer.

Where can I park for the trailhead?

The trail typically starts from Graines. Parking availability can vary, so it's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot. Specific parking areas are usually designated near the village or the initial access points to the trail.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this trail?

Based on available information, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Frudière Lakes Trail (Route 9) itself. However, it's always good practice to check for any local regulations or changes before your visit.

Are there any specific regulations for hiking in the Val d'Ayas region?

When hiking in the Val d'Ayas region, it's important to respect the natural environment. This includes staying on marked trails, not disturbing wildlife, and carrying out all your trash. Specific regulations might apply to camping, fires, or drone usage, so always check local signage or official Val d'Ayas tourism resources for the most up-to-date information.

Is the trail suitable for families or beginner hikers?

While some sections of the Frudière Lakes Trail might be considered medium difficulty and accessible, the overall route (Route 9) is rated as difficult. It involves significant elevation gain and rugged terrain, making it less suitable for beginner hikers or young children. Hikers should have very good fitness, sure-footedness, and some alpine experience.

What should I wear and bring for this hike?

Given the difficult rating and alpine environment, wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Dress in layers, as weather can change quickly, including waterproof outer layers. Bring plenty of water, snacks, a map or GPS device (like komoot), sun protection, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can also be very helpful on the steeper and rockier sections.

Is the Frudière Lakes Trail (Route 9) a loop or an out-and-back route?

The specific Komoot route (Route 9) is designed as an out-and-back trail, covering approximately 12.6 km with similar elevation gain and loss. While the Frudière basin offers possibilities for various loops, this particular route follows a defined path to the lakes and back.

Are there any facilities like cafes or restrooms along the trail?

The Frudière Lakes Trail (Route 9) is a wilderness hike in an alpine environment. There are no facilities such as cafes, restaurants, or public restrooms directly on the trail. the dirt road approaching the starting point traveled by car allows to reduce the travel time a lot, but it is very steep and demanding and therefore it is necessary to pay the utmost attention to avoid damage to the car, especially if of small displacement and not suitable for off-road routes; the car park also has limited capacity
