The trail starts from Morge, a small hamlet of La Salle. You can find parking near the trailhead, which is clearly marked as Trail 21. Look for the large stone fountain dated 1897 near the starting point.
Yes, the Trail 21 to Liconi Lake is generally dog-friendly. However, given the challenging terrain, especially the steep and rocky sections, ensure your dog is fit for a long and demanding hike. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially in alpine pastures where livestock may be present, and to protect local wildlife.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring to early autumn (June to September). During summer, you'll see vibrant alpine flowers, including the rare ferruginous rhododendron. Always check weather conditions before you go, as alpine weather can change rapidly.
No, you do not need a special permit or have to pay an entrance fee to hike Trail 21 to Liconi Lake. The trail is freely accessible to the public.
No, this trail is classified as difficult and is not suitable for beginners. It involves a significant distance of over 16 km and a substantial elevation gain of more than 1300 meters. The path includes steep and rocky sections, especially closer to the lake and the pass, requiring good physical conditioning and hiking experience.
The total duration for this hike is approximately 8 hours and 20 minutes (30007 seconds) for the round trip. The ascent to Liconi Lake alone takes about 3 hours and 20 minutes, extending to 3 hours and 50 minutes if you continue to the Col de Licony. The descent from the col is roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes.
The trail offers diverse scenery. You'll pass through wooded areas, vast alpine pastures, and rocky sections. Highlights include a View of the Forest, a Rocky Stream Crossing, and the stunning Liconi Lake itself. Reaching the Col de Licony (2670 m) provides magnificent panoramic views of the Mont Blanc massif and the Val Sapin.
The main facility along the trail is the Licony Village Fountain, which can be a source of fresh water. Beyond Licony Village, facilities are sparse. It's advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks for the entire duration of the hike.
The terrain varies significantly. It starts with a dirt road, then transitions to forest paths, opening up to alpine pastures. The path to the lake becomes narrower, steeper, and includes rocky sections, often passing a waterfall. The final climb just before reaching Liconi Lake is particularly steep and demanding.
The climb just before reaching Liconi Lake is known to be particularly steep and requires significant effort. It's wise to conserve energy in the earlier sections, take regular breaks, and ensure you're well-hydrated and fueled. Many hikers find trekking poles helpful for stability and reducing strain on the knees during both the ascent and descent of these steep sections.
Beautiful hike. You can also start from Morgex and reach Testa di Liconi, but the view of the lake and the white is worth the effort!
Leaving the car in Morge we continued on path 21 which initially appears as a farm road downhill of about fifty meters in altitude. After passing some delightful huts, the feeling begins with a long ups and downs in the woods leading to the farm road towards the mini village of Licony (reached in an hour and 15 minutes). From there I always feel uphill with slightly harder stretches with a few hairpin bends alongside the stream up to the splendid lake from which you can see the pass at the top left (reached in 2 hours and 50 minutes) the antennas behind the bivouac just below the point. Continue uphill, discovering more and more the Grandes Jorasses behind the hill with the splendid view of the lake and the Valdigne behind you, up to the huts from which a grassy path reaches the hill with an incredible panoramic view of the entire massif of Mont Blanc. A little further effort on a path on the coast and then on stony ground for the last 30 minutes
