This trail is rated as 'moderate'. While it involves significant elevation changes, with about 580 meters (1,900 feet) of ascent, it is generally manageable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. Some sections might be steep or uneven, so sure-footedness is beneficial.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the G20 Trail?

The terrain varies, taking you through alpine landscapes. You'll encounter paths that wind past lakes, through valleys, and up to mountain passes. Expect a mix of well-trodden paths and potentially rocky or uneven sections, especially as you gain elevation towards the pass.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

You'll discover several captivating spots, including the charming village of Riale di Sotto, stunning views of Lago Morasco, and the serene Valgeis Pond. The Maria Luisa Hut offers a great resting point with incredible views of the surrounding mountains. Don't miss Lake Toggia and the Ruins of the Wagristoratore on San Giacomo Pass.

Where does the trail start and where can I park?

The trail officially starts in Riale. You can typically find parking available in or near the village of Riale di Sotto, which serves as the trailhead for many routes in the Val Formazza area. Specific parking instructions might be available locally.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The best time to hike this alpine trail is generally from late spring to early autumn (June to September). During these months, the snow has usually melted, and the weather is more stable, offering pleasant hiking conditions and access to all parts of the route. Always check local weather forecasts before you go.

Is the G20 Trail: Riale to San Giacomo Pass dog-friendly?

Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in this region, but it's always best to keep them on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or protected wildlife. Ensure your dog is fit enough for a moderate alpine hike and carry enough water for both of you.

Do I need any permits or pay entrance fees for this trail?

As this trail is located in the Val Formazza area, it typically does not require specific hiking permits or entrance fees for the trail itself. However, always be mindful of local regulations, especially if you plan to stay overnight in huts or venture into specific protected areas.

Does this trail intersect with other hiking paths?

Yes, the route shares sections with several other trails. Notably, it fully covers the 'G20 - Riale - Passo di San Giacomo' trail and intersects with parts of the '08N - Capanna Cristallina - Rifugio Maria Luisa' and '09S - Robiei - Rifugio Maria Luisa' routes. You'll also find it briefly crosses the 'Via Alpina Blue D1' and 'Sentiero Italia - Tappa E62A'.

Are there any facilities or accommodation options along the way?

The Maria Luisa Hut is a key facility along the route, offering a place to rest and potentially food or accommodation. Riale di Sotto, at the start, also has some amenities. It's always wise to carry sufficient water and snacks, as services can be sparse in alpine environments.

Is the G20 Trail: Riale to San Giacomo Pass suitable for beginners?

Given its 'moderate' difficulty rating, elevation gain, and length, this trail might be challenging for absolute beginners. It's best suited for hikers with some experience and a good level of physical fitness. Beginners might prefer shorter, flatter routes in the Val Formazza area to build up their endurance.

Trail Reviews

Francesco Candiani
October 14, 2023, Riale-Passo San Giacomo-Rifugio Maria Luisa

Upper Formazza Valley. From Riale you go up to Lake Toggia, partly from the road and partly from the path. We continue towards Passo San Giacomo, arriving in Swiss territory, where the old finance barracks has been transformed into an Alpine refuge for cyclists (work almost finished). On the way back, an obligatory stop at the refuge for lunch. The autumn colors and low clouds gave the route a particular charm.

Leave the car in Riale, immediately after the Toce waterfalls. We begin to climb towards Lake Toggia, along the gippabile to warm up a bit, then we can take the quite demanding path. You enter the valley, where it flattens out and you quickly arrive first at the Matia Luisa refuge, then at the lake. Continue along the comfortable road up to the San Giacomo pass, where there is the border with Switzerland and where the Val Maggia begins. On the way back you can take the path around the lakes and go back again to the Toggia dam (not done because of the weather...). A good lunch at the refuge and you go down the same route, and this time you dive down the steep path to full quadriceps femoris. Small detour for a quick visit to the village of Riale, and back to the car. Separate start, fairly easy route, all you need is a good pace.
