Hiking

Embark on a moderate 6.0-mile (9.6 km) hike from Monte Farno to Rifugio Parafulmine, a journey that takes about 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete. You will gain 1084 feet (330 metres) in elevation as you traverse an ancient agro-pastoral road, known locally as Il percorso delle malghe. The route winds through the alpine landscape of Val Gandino, offering glimpses of traditional stone huts and cattle grazing in the meadows of Conca del Farno. As you ascend, you'll experience the changing terrain, eventually reaching the Rifugio Parafulmine with its expansive views of Pizzo Formico and the surrounding peaks. This trail offers a blend of natural beauty and historical charm.

Your adventure begins conveniently from the parking area at Monte Farno, providing easy access to the trailhead. It is advisable to start your hike in the morning to fully enjoy the views and allow ample time for breaks. While on the trail, you will find the Baita Cornei, which serves as a good spot for a mid-hike rest, equipped with vending machines and other facilities. Plan your visit during favorable weather conditions to make the most of the outdoor experience.

This route, also known as Il percorso delle malghe, connects the Monte Farno basin to the Montagnina alpine pastures, highlighting centuries of mountain farming tradition. Along the way, you can learn about traditional cheese-making and the unique quality of high-altitude grasses. The trail also passes through interesting karst sinkholes, showcasing the region's geological features. It's a journey that offers a deep dive into the alpine heritage of Val Gandino.

Conca del Farno

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Conca del Farno is famous for its unique microclimate, which can lead to extremely low temperatures, comparable to those of the Arctic. For example, peaks of -29°C and even -33°C have been recorded in the past. This phenomenon is due to the geological and morphological conformation of the area, characterized by karst depressions that favor thermal inversion. During clear and windless nights, cold air remains trapped in the basin, creating particularly harsh conditions.

Traveling along the mountain hut road on Monte Farno, the Tribulì de morc is the point that delimits the plateau on the opposite side to the starting point, it is generally a crossing point to go up to the Parafulmine refuge and consists of a small chapel. Continuing you descend to Malga Lunga.

Parafulmine Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Cozy hut / refuge on the top of Montagnina, which in truth would be the opposite peak to the north.
It overlooks the karst and pastureland basin of the Farno, with a beautiful view of the nearby Pizzo Formico.

Eli with our 5 month old panettone. Me with my new crusader of almost 2 months. With the lavish company of global warming which, to put it to Jennifer Lawrence, "will kill us all, you know it?"

A romantic moonlit walk with dinner at Parafülmen included. A truly wonderful evening thanks to the full moon.

Evening in the Farno basin under the splendid moon. Too bad the refuge was closed (I knew it) and consequently a sandwich dinner🥴 Truly wonderful evening with a truly magnificent moon

When you arrive in the town of Gandino you have to buy the "scratch and stop" ticket to be able to park on Mount Farno. So when you get near the "Colonia" you leave your car and start the walk and, when you reach the Farno refuge almost immediately, you can choose whether to go straight up (steeper) or take the dirt road on the left and walk along "the panoramic passes near the "Roccolo". Both paths then come together to reach the "Pizzo Formico" which almost always remains in sight. Descend on the opposite side and reach a farmhouse where you can leave it on the left and go directly to the "Parafulmen" refuge or leave it on the right and continue on the wider path that leads to the "tribulina di Morcc". Then go up to the right to reach the aforementioned Parafulmen refuge where you can have lunch without booking following the order of arrival. The route ends in a ring or descending between various curves for vehicles or through a path located in the middle of the meadows. You reach the Baita di Gornei (of the Mountain Community) where you can use the toilet and the vending machines for fresh drinks. Then continue on the dirt road that leads back to the start

Today we left home at 12.30. Beautiful day, left alone and returned with friends. Little snow, walking without crampons.
