This route was planned by komoot.
The trail starts in Santa Croce, near the 15th-century Church of the Invention of the Holy Cross. You'll find abundant free parking available in this area.
While the CAI 561 trail is generally classified as 'E' (Escursionistico - Hiking) and described as simple, it does have sections that require caution. Some ridge parts can be exposed and narrow, and ascending towards Pizzo Rabbioso involves steep, rocky climbs with loose dirt, roots, and boulders. The descent from Pizzo Rabbioso can also be challenging. It's best suited for hikers with some experience and good physical condition.
The terrain is diverse, featuring forested areas, rocky sections, and mule tracks. You'll also encounter traditional 'roccoli' (hunting blinds) and 'baite' (huts or shelters), as well as the ancient stone houses of Contrada Fenii. Ridge line sections offer extensive panoramic views.
You'll encounter several notable features. On Monte Corno, look for the Big Bench 128 (Blue Bench) – Monte Corno, which offers fantastic panoramic views, and the Monte Corno Summit Cross. On Pizzo Rabbioso, you'll find the Alpini Cross of Pizzo Rabbioso. The trail also passes by Corna Maria and the settlement of Contrada Fenii.
The loop typically takes approximately 4 hours to complete, covering a distance of about 8.6 kilometers with an elevation gain of around 440 meters.
This is a scenic loop hike that connects Monte Corno and Pizzo Rabbioso, starting and ending in Santa Croce.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, given some of the exposed and rocky sections, ensure your dog is accustomed to such terrain and keep them on a leash for their safety and the safety of wildlife.
No, you do not need a permit or have to pay an entrance fee to hike the Monte Corno to Pizzo Rabbioso Ridge Trail (via CAI 561).
The trail is best enjoyed during spring, summer, and autumn months when the weather is generally mild and the views are clear. Always check the local weather forecast before heading out.
Yes, near the end of the trail in Santa Croce, there is a refreshing fountain with cold water available for hikers.
The loop can be completed in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. Some hikers prefer to ascend the steeper, rockier sections towards Pizzo Rabbioso first, while others prefer to tackle them on the descent. Consider your comfort with steep climbs versus descents when choosing your direction.
The via ferrata requires equipment. We weren't equipped and we solved it by going around the Corno Maria on an alternative path. (It would have been better for the app to highlight this detail).
