This route was planned by komoot.
While komoot rates the Tour of Lausfer as 'moderate' based on its core stats, be aware that the full route, especially if you include ridge crossings or less-frequented sections, can be quite challenging. It often involves rocky terrain, scree, and potentially some easy climbing (grade I+). Hikers should have very good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and some alpine experience. Some parts can be technical or exposed.
The full Tour of Lausfer is generally not recommended for beginners or young families due to its challenging alpine terrain and technical sections. While some approaches to the Lake Sainte-Anne or the Lausfer Lakes from the Italian side might be more accessible, the complete tour requires significant hiking experience and fitness.
Specific parking details depend on your chosen starting point, as the trail can be accessed from different sides in the Maritime Alps. Common starting points are often near the Italian side, such as in the Vinadio area, or from the French side. It's best to check the exact trailhead on your komoot tour map for the most precise parking information.
Public transport options to the high-mountain trailheads for the Tour of Lausfer are limited. Services might be available to larger towns like Vinadio or Isola 2000, but reaching the specific starting points often requires a car or a pre-arranged shuttle service, especially for Sant'Anna di Vinadio. Always check local bus schedules, as they can be seasonal and infrequent.
The Tour of Lausfer is located within the Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime. Generally, there are no entrance fees for hiking in the park. However, specific regulations apply, such as those regarding camping, waste disposal, and protecting wildlife. While permits are not typically required for day hikes, it's always wise to check the official park website for any updated rules or specific restrictions, especially concerning sensitive areas or during certain seasons.
Regulations regarding dogs can vary within the Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime and the adjacent Mercantour National Park (France). In general, dogs are often allowed on trails but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and livestock. However, some protected areas or specific trails might have stricter rules or even prohibit dogs. Always check the current regulations for the specific section of the park you plan to visit.
The best time to hike the Tour of Lausfer is typically from late June to early October. During this period, the snow has usually melted from the higher elevations, and the weather is more stable. Outside of these months, you may encounter significant snow, ice, or rapidly changing alpine conditions, making the trail much more challenging or impassable.
The route offers stunning high-mountain scenery and several notable points of interest. You'll traverse the Colle del Lausfer, encounter a picturesque Wooden Bridge on Mountain Trail, and enjoy a magnificent View of Lake Sainte-Anne. You might also pass the Abandoned Rifugio Tallone and several beautiful lakes, including Lake of Colle S. Anna, a Small Mountain Lake with Boulder, and Lac de San Gioachino.
Yes, the Tour of Lausfer route overlaps with sections of several other trails. You'll find it shares paths with the 'Entraunes - Col de Salèse', 'Sentiero Italia - Tappa E12', 'Via Alpina Red R140', 'Via Alpina', and 'Via alpinistica Don Gino' for various portions of the hike.
Amenities are scarce directly on the high-mountain sections of the Tour of Lausfer. You might find basic services or an Abandoned Rifugio Tallone, but don't rely on it for supplies. For cafes, pubs, and accommodation, you'll need to descend to nearby towns such as Vinadio in Italy or Isola 2000 in France. Plan to be self-sufficient for the duration of your hike.
The Tour of Lausfer traverses diverse high-mountain terrain. Expect a mix of rocky ridges, scree fields, and boulder sections. Some parts may follow old military tracks, while others might be less defined, requiring good trail-finding skills. You'll encounter alpine, unpaved, and occasionally some paved surfaces, all set against a backdrop of glacial lakes and immense peaks.
Great hike, but it took us four hours because of the weather. But otherwise, it was great 🥰
Departure from the Sanctuary of Sant'Anna di Vinadio, after Vinadio, towards Colle della Lombarda. Beautiful places need to be revisited every now and then! Relatively simple itinerary, but requires a minimum of training. Unparalleled views of the lakes and the two Italian-French sides. Lots of ibex. ⚠️ Warning: from Col du Saboulet to Passo Tesina the path still has numerous snow-covered sections. Mostly load-bearing snow; crampons are not necessary, but poles are. Be careful. PS: altitude difference and timing are not exact: it is about 560 d+ and 3.5 h without breaks for the entire ring. It is better to go first to Col du Lausfer and return from Tesina, because this way the balcony path is less impressive, especially with snow.
Classic, quiet trip with breathtaking views. Highly recommended to stop until sunset and return in the dark. Travel along the Stura Valley to Vinadio and turn just beyond the town towards Colle della Lombarda, in the direction of the Santuario di Sant'Anna (medieval origins and the highest sanctuary in Europe). Well signposted. It is recommended to go along the ring going straight at the fork, rather than turning right, because in this way you will always find the lakes in front, rather than behind you.
