This section of the Sentiero del Viandante is generally considered difficult, suitable for hikers in good physical condition with some experience. Both the high and low variants involve strenuous uphill sections, rocky terrain, and significant elevation changes. Proper hiking footwear is highly recommended.
The terrain is diverse, featuring ancient mule tracks, narrow paths, and sections through wooded areas. You'll encounter rocky ground, particularly near the Pianca valley and on descents towards Varenna. Expect both ascents and descents throughout the route.
The full hike from Lierna to Varenna can take approximately 6 to 7 hours, depending on your pace and which variant you choose. The high variant might take around 4 to 6 hours, while the low variant is estimated at about 4 hours and 15 minutes. This includes time for enjoying the views.
You'll be treated to continuous panoramic views of Lake Como, Lierna, and Bellagio. Notable viewpoints include the View of Varenna and Lake Como, the Eremo Gaudio Terrace, and the Croce di Brentalone on the high variant. You'll also pass through charming settlements like Vezio and Borgo Coria, and by the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate.
The best times to hike are typically spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). During these seasons, the weather is milder, the landscapes are vibrant with colors, and the trails are less crowded than in peak summer. Avoid the hottest summer months if possible, as sections can be exposed.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, please keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through villages, near livestock, or on narrow, rocky sections. Always carry waste bags and clean up after your pet.
No, there are typically no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Sentiero del Viandante from Lierna to Varenna. While the trail passes through areas within the Parco Regionale della Grigna Settentrionale, access for hiking is generally free.
The trail is easily accessible by public transport due to the railway line along Lake Como's eastern shore. You can take a train directly to Lierna. Parking options in Lierna might be limited, especially during peak season, so arriving early or using public transport is advisable.
Yes, this route covers significant portions of the official "Sentiero del Viandante (Lierna - Perledo) (variante bassa)" and also intersects with sections of the "PCIR 03 Adda" and "Via dei Patriarchi" trails.
Given the trail's difficulty and varied terrain, it's essential to pack appropriate gear. This includes sturdy hiking shoes, sufficient water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), rain gear (even if the forecast is clear), a first-aid kit, and a charged phone. Layers of clothing are also recommended due to changing elevations and weather conditions.
While the trail passes through or near charming villages like Vezio and ends in Varenna, which offers various amenities, there are limited facilities directly on the trail itself. It's best to carry enough water and snacks. You'll find more options for food and drink once you reach Varenna.
The tour is very stony, steep and has many steps and no particularly positive highlights except for a nice view of the lake from time to time. From a certain age, sticks are highly recommended to relieve the knees. I found the route annoying and rough and would rather recommend the route from Varenna to Bellano.
I took the shorter stage today so I still had time to see the Castel and Varenna. The train is now taking me back to the motorhome... And in the dungeon the GPS left me and made strange recordings 🤷♀️
