Always beautiful the moment when the still bare forest is dotted with the first flowers. San Pietro al monte is in a magnificent position in front of the Resegone, with a view of the Oggiono lake. From Civate it is a simple walk on a paved mule track, then climbing to Cornizzolo is a little more challenging, especially if it is muddy like today.
A fairly simple trail, well marked, especially in the initial section leading to the basilica, presents no technical difficulties except for a few short sections with gradients exceeding 30%. Architectural structures from various eras can be admired, from the architectural complex of the Abbey of San Pietro al Monte to the various stone structures used in the 19th century as shelters for farmers in bad weather (the famous Casote). At the summit, there is the SEC Marisa Consigliere refuge, a chapel dedicated to the fallen, and the cross of Monte Cornizzolo. From the summit, you can see Monte Rai in the foreground, starting from the northeast, with the two Grigna mountains in the background. Then you can see Resegone, Monte Barro, the lakes of Annone, Pusiano, and Alserio, and a little further down, the summit of Monte Pesora. Looking towards the Larian Triangle, you can admire Monte Bolettone, Monte Palanzone, San Primo, and in the distance, Lake Como with the peak of Legnone emerging behind the Grigna.
