This route was planned by komoot.
The Komoot tour for the Sentiero delle Marocche Dinosaur Trail is approximately 4.4 km (2.7 miles) long and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete at a moderate pace. However, other routes in the area can range from 5.5 to 8 km (3.4 to 5 miles) and take 2 to 3 hours. The trail is generally considered moderate, suitable for families and children, with a modest elevation gain.
The trail winds through the Marocche di Dro biotope, a unique landscape often described as moon-like or a vast rocky desert. It's characterized by an imposing mass of rocky material and debris from ancient post-glacial landslides. The environment is arid, with uniquely adapted plant and animal life.
The most significant feature is the presence of fossilized dinosaur footprints, dating back 190 to 200 million years, found on scattered rocks within the "Frana di Kas" area. You can also see the marshy oasis of Laghisoli, enjoy views of Lago di Cavedine, vineyards, and the Castle of Drena. Information panels provide insights into the geology and dinosaur discoveries. Other notable spots include the Dinosaur Fossil Rocks of Marocche Biotope and the Sea of rocks with dinosaur tracks, Biotopo Marocche di Dro.
Yes, the trail is generally considered easy to moderate and is well-suited for families and children. The educational path with information panels about the geology and dinosaur tracks makes it an engaging experience for younger hikers.
The trail is accessible year-round due to its low altitude. However, it is strongly advised to avoid hiking on hot summer days, as the rocks reflect the sun and can make the heat intense. Early spring, late autumn, or even winter are the recommended times for a more comfortable experience.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trail. However, as it is part of the Natura 2000 Network and a biotope, it's always best to keep them on a leash to protect the local wildlife and ensure their safety on the rocky terrain.
No, there are typically no entrance fees or permits required to hike the Sentiero delle Marocche Dinosaur Trail or to access the Marocche di Dro Nature Reserve. It is freely accessible to the public.
While specific parking locations are not detailed, the trail is well-known, and you can usually find parking near the start of the various routes within the Marocche di Dro area. Look for designated parking areas near the biotope or follow signs for the dinosaur trail.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Notably, it covers 100% of the "Sentiere delle Marocche" trail and also passes through significant sections of the "Ciclovia dei laghi" (Lake Cycle Path) and the "Sentiero di visita del Biotopo delle Marocche" (Marocche Biotope Visitor Trail).
Given the rocky and arid terrain, sturdy hiking shoes are essential. Bring plenty of water, especially outside of cooler seasons, as there are no water sources on the trail. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is also highly recommended due to the reflective rocks and open environment. Binoculars can enhance your views of the surrounding landscape and distant landmarks.
It's a lot. Over loose stone, so good footwear is necessary!

All in all, a beautiful, but also strenuous tour due to scree and stone climbing. The picture with the palm trees is misleading, it was a private, very nicely landscaped garden. The tour consists of a lot of scree and large to very large stones and only leads a small section through small forests and vineyards. Not recommended in the sun! The indicated time is illusory. We were on the road for a net 3 hours!
