This route was planned by komoot.
While komoot rates this route as 'difficult', for experienced hikers, this stage of the Sentiero Italia is generally considered a medium-length hike with a relatively gentle uphill climb. It's less strenuous than some other sections of the Grand Italian Trail, making it a rewarding experience for those with good hiking experience.
The trail primarily traverses through pleasant woods and wide meadows. You'll encounter varied terrain, including forest paths and open areas, offering a generally agreeable path through the picturesque Val di Non.
You'll pass several interesting spots. Highlights include a Forest walk from Regola Refugia to Mascola, Wooden Sculptures Along Trail 515, and sections of the Sentiero dei Siori – Water Trail. The Regole Mountain Hut is also along the way, and you'll start near the Fondo Water Clock.
Yes, the destination itself, Rifugio Oltradige (also known as Überetscher Hütte), offers extensive panoramic views. From there, you can see the Adige Valley and prominent Dolomite mountain groups like Latemar, Pale di San Martino, and Marmolada.
Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in this region, but it's always best to keep them on a leash, especially when passing through villages, near livestock, or in areas with wildlife. Be sure to carry enough water for your dog, as water sources might be limited.
The best time to hike this route is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, and the trails are clear of snow. Always check local weather conditions before you go, especially for higher elevations.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this section of the Sentiero Italia or to access the general Val di Non area. However, if you plan to visit specific attractions like the Canyon Rio Sass, those may have separate entry fees.
Fondo is a well-known village in Val di Non, and you can typically find parking in or around the village center. For public transport, local bus services connect Fondo with other towns in the Val di Non and surrounding areas. It's advisable to check current bus schedules for the most up-to-date information.
Yes, this route is part of the larger Sentiero Italia - Tappa C06. It also briefly intersects with sections of the SICAI Ciclo, Pista ciclabile Alta Valle di Non, and the Sentiero dei Siori - Wassersteig.
The Bivouac Baita Larsetti, which you may pass along the way, provides a fountain for hikers. Additionally, the Regole Mountain Hut and Rifugio Oltradige offer amenities like food, drink, and accommodation. It's always wise to carry sufficient water, especially on longer stretches between facilities.
Rifugio Oltradige (Überetscher Hütte) is a mountain hut offering basic amenities for hikers. You can expect food, drinks, and overnight accommodation. It's a great place to rest and enjoy the panoramic views before continuing your journey or heading back down.
There is a canyon below a city in the world. It's the RIO SASS. Here we paid a short visit and looked at mountains from the inside. We started the excursion at the Smeraldoweg and followed the catwalk along the limestone walls and the waterfall to the lake. A fossil lover comes here on his Re. and can admire shell imprints on the walls. Lucky that the gigantic granite block from the Ice Age is wedged between the walls😅 Then it was uphill (again) to the Mandelpass (1,363m). ⛰️This leads through shady forest areas with wild orchids like in the picture. Our path ended at the mountain station of the Madelpassbahn.🚞 From here we were rewarded with a wonderful view of the shimmering Lake Caldaro. With a transfer we then went down to the lovely wine route and we enjoyed the local Chardonnay in the evening at the certificate ceremony in Bozen. 🥂 WE DID IT!!!🙌
