This route was planned by komoot.
The trail commonly starts near the mining museum in Maiern/Masseria. You can usually find parking available in this area, which serves as a convenient access point for the gorge.
Yes, public transport options are generally available to reach the Ridnauntal Valley. Check local bus schedules for routes that serve Maiern/Masseria, which is the typical starting point for the trail.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trail. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially given the trail's varied terrain and potential for other hikers or wildlife. Please also remember to clean up after your pet.
No, there are no specific permits required, nor is there an entrance fee to hike the Ridnauntal Valley to Burkhardklamm Gorge Trail.
The best time to hike is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally favorable, and the glacial stream feeding the waterfalls is often at its most impressive. Hiking in winter might be possible but requires appropriate gear and caution due to snow and ice.
The trail features a mix of terrain, including paths through shady coniferous forests, meadows, and sections alongside the Fernerbach glacial stream. You'll encounter a romantic, approximately one-meter-wide path, with some parts following an old carrier trail. Wooden bridges provide access to observation decks, and the path can be rocky and uneven in places, especially closer to the gorge.
Along the route, you'll experience the stunning natural beauty of the Ridnauntal Valley and the powerful waterfalls of the Burkhard Gorge. Key sights include the Ridnaun Valley Hike, a Wooden Wayside Shrine, a Biotope pond in the Ridanna Valley, and the Scenic Mountain Valley and Stream. You'll also find several viewpoints like the Bench with view of Ridnauntal Valley and a Bench With View of the Dolomites on the Way to Burkhardklamm, leading to the dramatic Entrance to Burkhard Gorge.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of other official trails, including the 7-Seen-Tour, Obere Erzstraße, Mining path Schneeberg, Sennerberg / Ridnaun, Krinne - Agleralm, Burkhartklamm (Wasserfall), Gesenne / Wieserstadel, Elliswiesen, and Moarerberg.
The core path to the waterfalls is often described as moderate and generally suitable for families with active children. However, some sections, especially those closer to the gorge, can be narrow and require sure-footedness. Always assess your family's hiking experience and fitness level before embarking on the full trail.
While the direct trail to the Burkhardklamm Gorge waterfalls from the mining museum is often considered moderate, be aware that longer loop routes in the area, such as an 18.3 km 'Burkhard Gorge – Burkhardklamm Gorge loop,' are classified as difficult. These longer, more challenging options require very good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and potentially alpine experience. The specific 'Ridnauntal Valley to Burkhardklamm Gorge Trail' described here is a challenging hike, so always check the specific route details before you go.
The Ridnauntal Valley is a popular tourist area, so you can find various amenities in nearby villages like Maiern/Masseria. These may include cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options, especially during peak season. It's advisable to check availability and opening hours in advance.
We have been to this valley several times, but have never hiked to the end. The route along the gorge is truly spectacular, but it is quite rocky in places, and goes up and down. When the alpine hut comes into view, you can skip the last steep bend and go straight over the wobbly iron bridge.
Today we arrived in South Tyrol to beautiful weather. To kick off our hiking week, we're embarking on an easy tour in the Ridnaun Valley. From the show mine, through the Burkhard Gorge to the Aglsbodenalm, past the small waterfall, and back along the other side of the gorge to the car. Simply wonderful 🤩😍🥰
Beautiful autumn hike to the Aglsbodenalm. To warm up, take the forest road to the gorge. The field paths were closed to give the cattle the last of the fresh grass. There is a beautiful route along the north side of the Ridanna to the alpine pasture with a steep ascent and descent. If you want to go to the Grohmannhütte, you should set off early in the autumn (+3 hours there and back)! Then just a short way down the forest road and then along the south side of the stream to the valley. This is very steep and rocky in places and is only recommended in wet weather for sure-footed people. Otherwise, take a leisurely walk down the forest road to the mine. A stop at the Alsbodenalm is highly recommended. The trout is freshly caught. You can also fish for it yourself🤠 and then have it prepared. The strudel is homemade.
Arrival in South Tyrol. Finally 2 weeks holiday in beautiful surroundings. Just before driving to the hotel, a detour near Vipiteno into the Ridnau Valley. The beautiful circular route from the mining museum through the Burkhardklamm to the Aglsbodenalm is a perfect start to a hiking holiday. The weather cleared up and the view improved. The gorge with roaring water, bridges, footbridges is a great experience. And the bacon dumpling soup on the Aglsbodenalm was a poem. It can go on like this 👌😍
Very nice, not too long hike from the mining museum via path 8 to the Burkhardklamm, on to the Aglsbodenalm and back on the other side of the gorge.
We had to make the ascent completely in continuous rain, but were rewarded with beautiful pictures. Traveling waterfalls and rock formations of awe-inspiring beauty everywhere you look. In the Alm you will be served the best and the descent on the almost natural path was great 👍😊👍.
Did a family hike today You have to be sure-footed. There is a great hut at the top We recommend
