The trail typically starts from Naturns. While specific parking lots aren't detailed, you'll find parking options within Naturns itself, which serves as the main access point for this route. Consider public transport options to reach Naturns if you prefer not to drive.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as parts of the route pass through the Texelgruppe Nature Park, it's essential to keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Always carry water for your dog, especially on warmer days.
The best time to visit is typically from spring through autumn. In autumn, you'll experience the vibrant colors of the vineyards and apple orchards. The trail offers shady forest paths, making it enjoyable even on warmer days. Always check local weather conditions before you go.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Wallburgweg to Prehistoric Fortress above Naturns. The trail is freely accessible to the public. However, remember that parts of the route are within the Texelgruppe Nature Park, so please respect all park regulations, such as staying on marked paths and not disturbing wildlife.
The terrain is diverse, featuring shady forest paths, ancient irrigation channels (Waale), and sections through apple orchards and vineyards. There's an initial ascent from Naturns, after which the path becomes relatively flat for a significant portion. Exposed sections are secured with wooden railings, and you'll cross the Kirchbach Waterfall via a wooden bridge and pass the Naturns Hydroelectric Power Plant Pipeline.
You'll encounter a variety of sights, including breathtaking panoramic views of the Vinschgau Valley, Naturns, and the Ortler mountain group. Key highlights include the View of the Vinschgau Valley and Juval Castle from Wallburgboden, the Kirchbach Waterfall, and the Naturns Hydroelectric Power Plant Pipeline. The trail also leads to the site of an ancient 'Wallburg' (hillfort) with prehistoric significance.
Yes, the route shares sections with several other trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the Wallburgweg (which covers 71% of this route), Naturlehrpfad, Jakobsweg Naturns - Cammino di San Giacomo Naturno, and Via Claudia Augusta, among others. This offers a chance to experience different aspects of the local trail network.
The full route is approximately 9.3 kilometers long and typically takes around 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views or explore points of interest.
Komoot rates this specific route as 'difficult' due to its length and elevation gain of approximately 300 meters. While some shorter variants of the Wallburgweg are considered easier, this full route requires a good level of fitness and sure-footedness. It's not technically challenging, but the sustained ascent and distance make it more demanding than a casual stroll.
While the trail itself doesn't have facilities directly on the path, many circular routes associated with the Wallburgweg allow for stops at traditional taverns or inns. You might find options like Wiedenplatzerkeller and Langwies nearby, offering traditional South Tyrolean refreshments, especially if you plan your hike as a loop starting and ending in Naturns.
The site of the Prehistoric Fortress (Wallburg) is historically significant as an ancient hillfort. Archaeological findings and wall remains indicate it was a cult and power place, likely dating back to the Iron Age. It offers a unique glimpse into the region's ancient past and the people who once inhabited the Vinschgau Valley.
Just the right thing for us after yesterday's mountain tour. Beautiful but not overly demanding tour with beautiful, but unfortunately not so beautiful views. Nice paths but also not so nice ways. Plenty of sun in one of the driest regions of Central Europe, which is clearly noticeable in the vegetation. We enjoyed it, especially since we knew what to expect at the start and end of the circular hike: the legendary focal point of every trip to South Tyrol. ;) Delicious food with a good glass. The highlight for us was the great Waalweg at the end of the round. Educational and an amazingly different world. Because of such a small gully...
From Naturns it goes through the Riesling region on beautiful hiking trails to the Wallburgboden vantage point. The way back to Naturns leads past the St. Prokulus Church with its old frescoes, which is well worth seeing.
