Hiking

This point-to-point hike begins at the Ötscher-Basis Nature Park Center in Wienerbruck, which you can reach from Mitterbach on the legendary Mariazellerbahn railway.

After a short section along the reservoir and past Austria's oldest dam, you’ll hike into a fascinating gorge. The trail leads past the beautiful Lassingfall cascade to the historic Kraftwerk Wienerbruck power plant.

You’ll then hike along the Ötscherbach stream past more waterfalls to reach the cozy Vorderötscher mountain hut, where you can refuel and even spend the night. For summit baggers, the route continues on the Geißriedelsteig trail to the Gemeindealpe, offering fantastic panoramas of the Lower Austrian and Styrian mountains. From here you have the option of taking the chairlift down to the valley.

The route ends in Mitterbach, where you can take the Mariazellerbahn railway back to Wienerbruck or enjoy overnight accommodation.

It’s possible to hike this route in the opposite direction. By taking the lift up to the Gemeindealpe, you’ll cut the distance and the amount of elevation gain required.

Trail Reviews

Steeler
July 10, 2021, Gemeindealpe und Ötschergräben 10.07.2021 19:54

In wonderful weather it was by car to the station of the Mariazellerbahn Wienerbruck-Josefsberg and by train 2 stations to Mitterbach am Erlaufsee. Here the hike to the valley station of the lift began and without any effort it went to the summit of the Gemeindealpe. After a short visit to the summit cross, we went downhill to the Halter hut where we strengthened ourselves for the steep descent to come. It then went down to the Greimelbach and on over the Ötschergräben back to Wienerbruck. We were able to enjoy wonderful views and also a cool bath in a washed-out part of the stream. Very nice hike - great!
