St. Lorenz to the Almkogel

Dense forests, steep rock faces, and a panoramic view that is second to none – the hike from St. Lorenz to the Almkogel is worth it! This moderately difficult tour requires some fitness and surefootedness, but is also manageable for experienced families with older children.

You start at the bus stop at the Drachenwand Inn in St. Lorenz. After just a few steps, you'll be immersed in the tranquil green of the forest. You'll follow the sound of rippling water. Cross the Klausbach stream over a small bridge and watch the clear waters bubble over the rocky riverbed.

Through the thick forest, the turquoise-blue Mondsee – one of the warmest lakes in the Salzkammergut – repeatedly peeks out. The higher you climb, the lighter the forest becomes. Soon you'll reach the summit cross of the Almkogel. From here, your gaze sweeps over Lake Mondsee, Lake Wolfgangsee, the Schafberg, the Drachenwand, and many other peaks of the picturesque Salzkammergut mountains. Here, you can breathe in the fresh air and enjoy a snack break.

Afterward, you'll head back the same way to St. Lorenz. The canopy of leaves along the way repeatedly reveals glimpses of the steep Drachenwand. Once you arrive in St. Lorenz, you'll find several places to stop for refreshments, for example in Gries am Wolfgangsee. Remember to bring provisions and plenty of water on this hike, as there are no staffed huts.
