Hiking

The Orchid Trail takes you on an exciting journey of discovery through one of the most biodiverse corners of the Bliesgau region. At ten informative stations, you'll learn about the special orchid species that grow here, why this particular area is their home—and what we can do to protect their habitat. But it's not just plant lovers who will find something to enjoy here: You'll also learn a lot about butterflies, birds, and grasshoppers along the route—a real highlight for nature lovers.

Part of the orchid area has been a nature reserve since 1957. No wonder: The mild, almost Mediterranean climate and the nutrient-poor soils provide ideal conditions for rare plants and animals. Here, you'll find around half of all orchid species found in Germany—a true natural gem!

The trail begins at the bus station in Gersheim, which is served by the Biosphere Bus 501 and lines 503, 504, 551, and 579. On narrow paths, you'll hike through a diverse landscape with some ascents and descents. Skipping the detour to the Kalkquellsumpf (limestone spring swamp) will shorten the walk by about one kilometer. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the path is partially uneven.

Tip: If you'd like to learn more about the orchids, you can also join a guided hike organized by the municipality of Gersheim. Please note that the orchid species bloom from April to July.

Highlight • Trail

VERY IMPORTANT: Stay on the paths! The plants are often so inconspicuous that they're easily trampled.

More than 20 rare orchid species bloom in this area from April to July. It's beautifully situated above the Blies Valley.

A lovely resting spot with a great view and a lounger. Not only is there an educational panel about local birds and animals, but you can also hear their sounds here. This player is powered by an environmentally friendly dynamo. 👍

This small but nice round trip in Gersheim (Bliesgau) is highly recommended. It is mostly over forest floor, which needs sturdy and non-slip footwear during and after rain. Unfortunately, most of the orchids have faded by the end of June. But it is still a nice way of rest and relaxation.

Nice round but due to the heat the orchids were no longer dewy😂😂😏

Nice tour through nature ... scenic great!

To be honest: I expected a sea of orchids. I got a cowslip path. 😐
