Kaiserstuhl Trail

Many people know the Kaiserstuhl primarily for its wine. Indeed, the artfully cultivated vineyard terraces give this small volcanic mountain range its distinctive character. But the Kaiserstuhl has much more to offer: On this hiking trail, you cross it from one end to the other and experience special natural areas, deeply cut ravines, fantastic views, and romantic old wine-growing villages. The Kaiserstuhl Trail begins and ends at train stations, which you can reach easily and quickly from Freiburg Central Station.

After arriving at the train station in Endingen, you will pass through the picturesque old town. You can refresh yourself briefly in the clear waters of the Erleweiher pond before tackling the longest climb of your tour up Katharinenberg. The beautiful spot by the chapel is worth the effort and invites you to take a rest.

If you miss the magnificent panoramic views here, you will find them just a few kilometers further on at the Eichelspitze observation tower. The Black Forest, the Vosges Mountains, and the expanse of the Rhine plain spread out before you. Passing the Vogelsang Pass, you climb your third mountain, the Totenkopf, the highest peak in the Kaiserstuhl. Here, too, you can enjoy stunning views from the Neunlinden Tower.

An impressive loess hollow path leads you down to Bickensohl. It is just one of several of these ancient paths that you will hike. With a little luck, you might spot colorful bee-eaters fluttering to their nesting burrows in the steep cliffs.

The trail continues through the impressively terraced vineyard landscape with many more distant views to your destination in Ihringen. Finally, you can sample one of the region's fine wines in the wine village of Ihringen before heading to the train station.
