The second-highest peak in the Black Forest after the Feldberg and its subsidiary peaks, the Herzogenhorn is far less well-known than its neighboring mountain opposite, and therefore considerably quieter. The view, however, is almost even more impressive: From here, the view sweeps across the Feldberg, and on a clear day,…

Today I felt like the summit feeling again, so I went to the Herzogenhorn. Unfortunately the weather was worse than predicted yesterday. I have a love-hate relationship with this tour. I love the peace and quiet as it is not very busy, but I mentally curse the entire climb and hope that I can make it up without a stroke. 😅 Today snow was added as a minor complicating factor. Once at the top I was able to blissfully enjoy the Alpine panorama from Säntis to Mont Blanc and had the summit almost to myself in the icy wind. In total I only met a handful of people and three over-motivated bikers who were bravely pushing through the sticky snow. On the way back the sun finally showed up. 😎
It was finally somewhat dry, so today we headed for the Herzogenhorn. We parked in Menzenschwand (€6/day) and then climbed a flat path, then a fairly steep one. At the top, there were fantastic panoramic views, but also a surprising number of people. Then we returned to the Feldberg Pass, where we had cake at the Menzenschwand Hut. The way back was rather boring before things got more attractive again at the Menzenschwand Waterfall. Overall, a nice hike up the second-highest mountain in the Black Forest.
My stomach-legs-butt program today took me from Menzenschwand to the Herzogenhorn. There's also a bit of cardio training on two steep climbs. There was already a good wind on the way, but then really strong gusts swept over the summit. That's why the part for the stomach 🥪🍅☕ only happened on the descent. Always a comfortable tour, albeit mostly on wide (gravel) paths. And there was finally an autumn feeling today. 🍁🍂🍄
With a long break on the summit, the total time was just under 5 hours. Extremely great view of the Swiss Alps! All in all, a nice and relaxed round trip!
I parked on the right side of the street above the bus parking lot. On the other hand, it costs € 10 parking fee for one day.
Very nice tour with Meet5. We started in Menzenschwand. All parking spaces there are now chargeable (6 euros). First we went to the Menzenschwander waterfalls. They're short, but really worth it. Continue on a narrow path and on a wider path towards Feldberg. There was actually still skiing going on there. We didn't necessarily expect that. We quickly worked our way up Grafenmatt in the snow, partly along the edge of the piste and on the west path in the forest. Up towards Herzogenhorn again along the trail in the snow - and there were actually 3 skaters out and about. There is always a breeze blowing around the Herzogenhorn - this time it was quite cold. Up on the summit - great all-round view with the finest view of the Alps - cobalt blue sky above us. Craziness!!! We didn't enjoy the feeling of happiness for a long time because of the cold wind, but we went steeply down and then a short distance back up to the Krunkelbacher Hut. It was packed inside - but the regulars' table had just become free for us. After a little refreshment, we made our way back to the starting point.
The starting point was the pass on the Feldberg. From there, the hike climbed to the Grafenmatt summit (1377 m). Continued toward Bernau and the high moor. From there, the hike continued toward Menzenschwand and the waterfall there. It was a beautiful valley trail through meadows and paths, with small waterfalls along the way. We took a short break and refueled. The route then continued uphill along the Feldbergweg, partially over the Geissenpfad (Goat Path) and high moors, all the way to the Menzenschwand Hut on the Feldberg. Shortly afterward, we reached the starting point again. A great tour in great weather. Unfortunately, the rain caught me in the final few meters. A successful circular tour and highly recommended. 🥾👍👌✅
Great start to your short vacation with perfect hiking weather
