The Emslanders call cheeky dwarves who once lived on the banks of the Ems River "Aulken." According to legend, they emerged from their caves at night to steal from farmers. You start your fabulous bike tour in Aschendorf and cycle into the species-rich Ems floodplains between Herbrum and Vellage. The route continues through the nature reserve to Rhede. There, you can visit the parish church of St. Nicholas and the Agricultural Museum before passing the Borsum Hills on your way to Herbrum.

The picturesque Sprengel pumpkin farm invites you to stop for refreshments. Upon arrival in Papenburg, you cycle to the Open-Air Maritime Museum, the landmark of Germany's oldest and longest fen colony. The circular route follows the main canal to the town hall and then to the city park. After crossing the Gleesen-Papenburg side canal, you can treat yourself to a rest at the Tunxdorfer Waldsee lake. A few kilometers later you are back at the starting point in Aschendorf.

Memorial Church of the District of Emsland

Highlight • Religious Site

Since 1995, the old Rheder parish church of St. Nicholas secularized Memorial Church of the district of Emsland. With the 50th anniversary of the end of the war on May 8, 1945, it became a memorial place for the "victims of the World Wars and National Socialist dictatorship".

From 1964 to 1991 she was "Kreiskriegergedächtniskirche" for the communities of the former district of Aschendorf-Hümmling. It served the memory of the fallen and missing German soldiers of the Second World War. Interesting is the narrowed perspective on the war victims.

The rededication of the church took place step by step after the construction of the new, large parish church of St. Nicholas 1913/14 in today's center. A permanent exhibition on the remembrance culture of the place, a historical organ from the 18th century, statues of saints and the impressive construction of the church itself - both inside and outside - make the visit worthwhile.

A farm shop and, in season, a superb pumpkin farm in Aschendorfermoor. Taking a break there is especially worthwhile during pumpkin season, but they also offer a wide selection of other food products from regional and national producers, in addition to their own products. Self-service coffee and tea are also available.

The Open-Air Maritime Museum in Papenburg consists of six replica ships located at various locations throughout the city. In addition to a tjalk, a spitzmutte, a kuff, and two schmacks, you'll also find the brig "Friederike von Papenburg." This is not only the city's landmark, but also houses Papenburg's tourist information office.
