One magnificent maar after another awaits you on this 11-kilometer (7 mi) loop. Below lies the Dauner Maare, a landscape that showcases a powerful volcanic history. Today, gentle green hills and the deep blue of its picturesque lakes contrast to the violence of its past. The impressive Dronketurm tower on the Mäuseberg adds a touch of medieval charm.

Maarkreuz — View of the Schalkenmehren Maar

Although the current location of the Maar Cross is no longer the original one, it offers hikers a relaxing place to rest and a fantastic view of the Schalkenmehrener Maar and the vast volcanic landscape. A saying was carved into the beam: “Maarkreuz be mentioned, for our salvation in this country. Emergency year 1932.” Since its construction, many pilgrims and hikers have taken a break on the mountain ridge with a view of the two maars.

Dronke Tower on the Mäuseberg

From the parking lot between the Weinfelder Maar and the Schalkenmehrener Maar, a path climbs uphill to the Dronketurm on äumeberg. There you have a panoramic view that extends as far as the Hunsrück when the weather is good. You can also see all three maars from here – Schalkenmehrener, Gemündener and Weinfelder Maar. A beautiful tour past three volcanic lakes (Maare) and many other sights. Almost entirely on forest paths or gravel roads.
