Normannstein Castle is impressively situated high above the town of Treffurt and offers magnificent views over the old town and the Werra Valley.

The castle complex is well restored and can be walked around in a circle.

July 10, 2023, TOP-Wanderweg Normannstein (Touringen Stempel 30, 88, 89) ☀️

A very nice circular route that started from the "Hand" hiking car park above Normannstein Castle. He led us in the direction of Schierschwende to the linden hedge. Then it was on to Adolfsburg and the Normannstein knight's castle. We were particularly impressed by the diverse nature, the magnificent meadows, beautiful forest paths, wonderful views of Treffurt and the Werratal. The circular route is well signposted, you need a good level of fitness for this tour, as there are good ups and downs.

Since it was still early in the day, I drove to Treffurt and again received three stamps: # - 88 Linden hedge # - 30 Adolfsburg # - 89 Normannstein Castle

Clear hiking recommendation 👍. This tour has a premium character for us. Very varied with great views of the Werratal. Several benches on the Sülzenberg or the hut at the Adolfsburg are recommended as resting places.

Start at the Hand parking lot near the 🏰 Castle. Via Adolfsburg, Treffurt, Sülzenberg and Lindenhecke. Nice trail with great views. Recommended.

From the parking lot below Normannstein Castle we went to Adolfsburg. From there it went back to Treffurt, past the Mainzer Hof to the Sülzenberg. On the top hiking trail we hiked to the linden hedge and back to Normannstein Castle. The variety of different hiking trails makes the tour an experience.

Today I spontaneously decided to join another "GE" group hike. 😃 The circular trail started in Treffurt. The route went past Adolfsburg Castle, to the Normannstein ruins, then to the Schierschwende barbecue area, over the Sülzenberg hill, and then back to Treffurt. The stamp enthusiasts 😜 could have collected three stamps here (30, 88, and 89), but unfortunately, two of the three were broken. 🤷🏻‍♂️🙁 I think it was still worth it; it was a great hike in fantastic weather. ☀️

The plan was to explore the orchid blossom near Rosbach today with a hiking guest who was advanced in age. His cancellation due to health reasons prompted a change of plan. We had already read a lot about the Normannstein and so this was our goal for the day. Our tour began below the Normannstein on the Pilgrimweg and initially led us slightly uphill in a westerly direction along the outskirts of town through the awakening nature. Surprisingly, we discovered the orchid here, which we actually wanted to see in Rosbach. Arriving at the westernmost point of our route, the Adolfsburgstieg began, which initially led us steeply uphill. A narrow path meandered through the forest in serpentines and finally revealed a wonderful view of the town of Treffurt and the Werra valley. The limestone gravel path had its highest point at the Adolfsburg and then meandered idyllically downhill through the forest until we reached the Normannstein. A circumnavigation of the beautifully restored castle brought us back to the TOP hiking trail. But it was still too early for a break in the castle's tourist restaurant. When we left the forest, the landscape opened up and we hiked across meadows, past an archery range, through never-ending, blooming rapeseed fields almost to Schierschwende. South of the village we reached the linden hedge, which offered a beautiful all-round view. If it had been a little clearer, we would certainly have been able to see the Rhön and the Inselsberg. The highest point of the hike was reached and the path now ran slightly downhill to behind the Sülzenberg. After the last six kilometers were characterized by the cultural landscape and farm roads, it was now back on paths through the forest - these are routes that we love! We spread out the provisions we had brought with us on a bench on the Sülzenberg and enjoyed the wonderful view of the Werratal and the Normannstein. Shortly afterwards it went steeply downhill again and we reached the southernmost tip of the route. A slightly sloping forest path brought us back to Treffurt. Again and again, small breakthroughs gave a view of the Werra before we reached the remains of the old city wall of Treffurt. A medieval idyll welcomed us and accompanied us past the Mainzer Hof to the Normannsteinquelle. A short distance uphill and we were back on narrow forest paths above the town. We used the Burgstieg to get back to our starting point and had completed a wonderful lap in fantastic weather. Conclusion: An excellent hiking trail, in first-class shape and well signposted, which leads through the Thuringian landscape in a very varied way and always offers new and surprising views.

On Wednesday afternoon I took advantage of the beautiful late summer weather for a tour of the TOP Normannstein hiking trail. The trail offers beautiful views of Treffurt and the Werra Valley. Meadow and limestone gravel paths alternate with narrow forest and ridge paths. Whether the panoramic view from the Lindenhecke or the view from the Sülzenberg, both are beautiful. The highlight, however, is without a doubt the ridge path and the associated views from the Adolfsburg. At dusk I could hear the crickets chirping. Bats were circling. Simply wonderful! As I had misjudged the time, I experienced the castle in the dark. As it is illuminated, this was not a problem either. Great tour, which I can only recommend.
