Sherpa Steps and Viewpoint Over Sørfjorden

Highlight • Viewpoint

These well-built Sherpa steps help you climb the steeper part of the trail towards the summit. Partway up, there's a great viewpoint where you can catch your breath and enjoy the surrounding fjord views.

View from Melderskin Summit

Highlight • Summit

The trail starts climbing nicely from the parking lot and gets pretty steep through the woods up onto the shoulder at about 850 m.a.s. (after the sherpa steps), further up follows a beautifully flat part until you reach the last part to the summit. We were overwhelmed by the view, from the glacier to the fjords and the mountain ranges. It‘s a six to seven hour round trip, strenuous over all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How challenging is the hike to Melderskin from Rosendal?

This hike is graded as difficult and requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes. The trail involves a significant altitude difference, and sections become progressively rockier and steeper as you ascend. Hikers should be prepared for a steep section before reaching the main ridge at around 900 meters (2953 feet).

How long does it typically take to complete the Melderskin hike?

The ascent to Melderskin typically takes about four hours, with the descent being slightly quicker. The total duration for the round trip is approximately 6 hours and 10 minutes, covering a distance of about 8.6 kilometers (5.3 miles).

What kind of views can I expect from the Melderskin summit?

From the summit of Melderskin, you can expect absolutely incredible and breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views. These vistas include the ocean, surrounding fjords, vast mountain landscapes, and parts of the majestic Folgefonna Glacier.

Are there any notable landmarks or features along the trail?

Yes, the trail offers several unique features. You'll encounter Sherpa Steps built by Nepalese Sherpas on the ascent to Skarshaug, which also provides a viewpoint over Sørfjorden. Higher up, you'll find a surprising 'moss carpet' and fresh spring water in Holo, a flat meadow area. The View from Melderskin Summit is marked by a protected cairn built in 1913.

What is the best time of year to hike Melderskin?

The best time to hike Melderskin is typically during the summer months. If hiking early in the season, be aware that snow-covered sections may still be present, potentially requiring crampons and an ice axe for safe passage.

Is the Melderskin hike dog-friendly?

While the trail is generally accessible, its 'difficult' grading, steep and rocky terrain, and potential for snow-covered sections mean it might not be suitable for all dogs. Consider your dog's fitness and experience with challenging mountain hikes before bringing them along.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee for this trail?

No, there are no specific permits required or entrance fees to hike the Melderskin trail. It is located within the broader region of Folgefonna National Park, which does not charge an entry fee for hiking.

Where does the trail start and is there parking available?

The trail begins with a short stretch along a road before veering into a mixed forest. While specific parking details are not provided, trails of this nature in Norway typically have designated parking areas near the trailhead. It's advisable to check local Rosendal information for precise parking locations.

What kind of terrain will I encounter on the Melderskin trail?

The terrain is quite varied. You'll start through open fields and mixed forests. As you ascend, the trail leaves the treeline and follows small ridges and valleys. The upper sections become progressively rockier with less vegetation. Be prepared for a mix of forest paths, rocky ascents, and potentially snow patches at higher elevations, especially earlier in the season.

Are there any public transport options to reach the Melderskin trailhead from Rosendal?

Specific public transport options directly to the Melderskin trailhead are not detailed. Rosendal itself is accessible by public transport, but reaching the exact starting point of the hike may require local taxi services or a short walk depending on the trailhead's distance from the town center.

What should I bring for the Melderskin hike?

Given the trail's difficulty and varied terrain, you should bring sturdy hiking boots, appropriate layers of clothing for changing weather conditions, rain gear, sufficient water and snacks, a map and compass (or GPS device), and a first-aid kit. If hiking early in the season, consider bringing crampons and an ice axe for potential snowfields.
