Route 457 is a very varied and at times challenging hike from the Franches Montagnes plateau down to the Doubs River and back up to the narrow Sommêtres ridge. We started in light rain, followed by a brief patch of fog. Afterwards, it remained dry and even sunny at times. Both the descent and the ascent lead past white Jurassic limestone cliffs, some with very interesting rock formations. The climb is considerably more demanding, with several sections secured by chains, as well as ladders and metal stairs. At the top, you cross a scree field, which was easily manageable. Along the Doubs, the path is easy and very secluded – wonderfully peaceful. The short detour into France to the small chapel is well worth it.
