Diversity in Nature and History: The Krumbach Moors Information/Facts: The moor is a place with many faces. In the past, mystical tales about the marshy areas were conveyed to us humans, and many were even afraid to enter one. Throughout history, we also associated the supernatural powers of witches with this exciting habitat. But as is so often the case in nature, the game seems to be exactly the opposite: Given the widespread destruction of moors by humans, this rare habitat should rather fear us. Thus, in the 21st century, only fragments of the former mosaic of wetlands remain. Today, we are aware of the outstanding benefits that moors bring and are trying to protect them – at least in Vorarlberg – to the greatest extent possible. One example of this is the diverse moorland areas in Krumbach. Thanks to valuable cooperation between nature conservation and agriculture, raised bogs, hillside bogs, and fens now line the pleasant hiking trails through the town. It doesn't take a trained eye to see that biodiversity is greater in extensively managed areas. Numerous species that specialize in the nutrient-poor life of moors find a welcome refuge here, filling it with colors, chirping, and chirping. Carnivorous plants such as sundew and a variety of orchids such as marsh orchids can be found here. Rare bird species can also be observed in spring and early summer. Protection and Conservation: In addition to international agreements that contribute to the protection of wetlands, the municipality of Krumbach itself and the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park are also committed to preserving their moors. Moor guides offer exciting insights into this habitat and contribute to its continued preservation through the dissemination of knowledge. Agriculture is also essential for the preservation of the areas, as it is farmers who, through extensive management and annual mowing, help to prevent too many nutrients from entering the areas and keep the moor free of bushes and trees. Tips for exploring: Moors are among the most sensitive habitats in Vorarlberg. When visiting Krumbach, it's therefore important not to leave the well-marked trails. Excursions can be started from various points, and the stops are marked with information signs. The municipality also offers guided tours on this topic by appointment. Parking and further information are available at Krumbach's village square.
