There is a dedicated parking area available at the starting point of the trail. This area is also home to the Autti Café, Museum and Parking Area, making it convenient to begin your hike.
Yes, the trail is dog-friendly. However, dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. There is also an alternative detour available for hikers with dogs to avoid a metal grate walkway, ensuring a more comfortable experience for your furry companion.
The trail is enjoyable year-round, but the best time for hiking is generally during the summer and autumn months. During these seasons, the trail is classified as easy to moderate. In winter, it becomes more challenging due to snow and potentially slippery conditions, though it's often suitable for snowshoeing or hiking with winter boots.
No, there are no permits required or entrance fees to access the Auttiköngäs Protected Forest or the nature trail itself. It is freely accessible to the public.
The terrain is varied, featuring towering evergreen forests, open meadows, and fell landscapes. You'll encounter rocky sections, gravel paths, wooden duckboards, and metal grate walkways. There are changes in elevation, including a steep descent to the waterfalls and a winding climb to the observation tower.
The trail offers several notable sights. Key highlights include the impressive Waterfall and Snow-Covered Boulders in Finland, the historic log flume, and the Könkäänvaara Observation Tower which provides panoramic views. You'll also cross the Auttijoki Suspension Bridge and Day Hut.
The trail is approximately 3.6 to 3.8 km long. Most hikers complete it in about 1 to 2 hours, depending on their pace and how much time they spend enjoying the sights.
Yes, the trail is generally suitable for families, especially during summer and autumn. It's classified as easy to moderate. While there are some steep and rocky sections, the varied scenery and points of interest keep it engaging for children. There are also short, accessible duckboard trails to viewpoints.
Yes, the trail is well-equipped. Near the parking area, you'll find the Autti Café (open seasonally), a museum, and outhouses. Along the route, there are two lean-to shelters with campfire sites, outhouses, and woodsheds for your convenience.
Yes, winter hiking is possible, but it becomes more challenging due to snow and potentially very slippery conditions. The trail is often tamped down, making it suitable for snowshoeing or hiking with appropriate winter boots. Be prepared for colder temperatures and shorter daylight hours.
It is often recommended to hike the trail in a counterclockwise direction. This way, you'll encounter a short but rather steep 50-meter descent to the Auttiköngäs Falls at the beginning, which involves metal stairs. This allows you to tackle the most challenging descent early in your hike.
We stopped at the Auttiköngäs waterfall. We thought it was just a waterfall. But there was a wonderful circular route over stairs, planks and bridges. At the waterfall, the trees used to be pushed down in a slide and then rafted down the river. After about an hour we were back at the car.
On the way from Rovaniemi to Kuusamo via road no. 81, we ended up at the waterfalls of Auttiköngäs. After a short drive down a dirt road, we reached the parking lot and the starting point for the Luontopolku Nature Trail. This approximately 3.5 km long circular trail leads past the waterfalls with a tree slide, over gratings and stairs into the moor and through untouched forest down to a suspension bridge. This may only be entered with a distance of 10 m between people and by a maximum of 2 people at the same time. Then we went up to the 196 m high Könkäänvaara with a lookout tower. Here you can have a nice view from the hill over the forests. There were also plenty of blueberries to snack on along the way.
To start the day, we visited the Auttiköngäs Waterfall on the Auttijoki River. Similar to the famous water slide on the Isar River, tree trunks were guided past the waterfall. A beautiful circular trail leads through the pristine Finnish landscape. Last but not least, we stopped at a café for a quick bite to eat 😋.
