The Stiemerbeek has its source in the Schansbroek nature reserve near the former Waterschei coal mine and the Horensberg forest area, on the border of the municipalities of Genk and As. The name is said to be Celtic and means steymer, stiemer, steymara = brook. From Waterschei to the center of Genk, the flow zone of the Stiemerbeek is the Stiemerbeek Valley nature reserve. In the center of Genk, the stream flows partly invisibly through pipes before becoming visible again in front of the Slagmolen in Genk and then flowing past the Maten nature reserve where it supplies the ponds with water.
