This route was planned by komoot.
The VITALtour Rheingrafenstein is a circular trail, so you can start at various points. Common starting points with parking include areas near Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg. Specific parking information is usually available on local tourism websites or komoot's tour planner.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as parts of the route pass through the Rotenfels Nature Reserve and Gans und Rheingrafenstein Nature Reserve, it's essential to keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Always pack out any waste.
The trail is enjoyable year-round, but spring (April-May) offers blooming flora and mild temperatures, while autumn (September-October) provides stunning fall foliage. Summer can be warm, so an early start is recommended. Winter hiking is possible, but some sections might be slippery or require appropriate gear due to ice or snow, especially in the more alpine-like areas.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the VITALtour Rheingrafenstein or to access the Rotenfels Nature Reserve and Gans und Rheingrafenstein Nature Reserve. Enjoying nature here is free.
Yes, as the trail traverses the Rotenfels Nature Reserve and Gans und Rheingrafenstein Nature Reserve, please stick to marked paths, do not disturb wildlife, and refrain from picking plants. Leave no trace behind, and keep dogs on a leash. These rules help preserve the unique natural environment.
The VITALtour Rheingrafenstein is approximately 15 kilometers long and typically takes around 4.5 to 5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views. Komoot estimates the duration at 4 hours and 20 minutes.
The terrain is varied and moderately difficult, requiring surefootedness in places. You'll encounter comfortable forest paths, narrow trails, and rocky, sometimes alpine-like sections with steep ascents and descents, including switchbacks and steps. While not for absolute beginners, hikers with some experience and good physical condition will find it rewarding. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended.
The trail offers numerous highlights. You'll enjoy panoramic views of the Nahe valley, the Rotenfels rock formation, and distant views towards the Donnersberg. Key points include the View of Rheingrafenstein Castle, the View from the Gans viewing platform, and the impressive rock formations themselves. You'll also pass by the ruins of Rheingrafenstein and Altenbaumburg castles, and an ancient ice age dune landscape.
Yes, the VITALtour Rheingrafenstein is a premium circular hiking trail. This means you'll end up back at your starting point without needing to retrace your steps, offering a continuous and diverse experience.
Yes, the trail passes near Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg, which offers various options for gastronomy and accommodation. The Altenbaumburg castle ruins often have a restaurant for a rest, and the hand-pulled ferry at Huttental can take you to the spa park of Bad Münster, where more facilities are available.
The trail is accessible via public transport, particularly through Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg, which has a train station. From there, you can often reach various starting points of the circular trail on foot or via local bus services. Check local transport schedules for the most up-to-date information.
Yes, the VITALtour Rheingrafenstein intersects with several other trails. You'll find sections that overlap with the CLASSICtour Rheingrafenstein, Long-distance trail Donnersberg-Donon, Tour Natur, and INTROtour Rheingrafenstein, among others. This offers opportunities to extend or combine your hike if you wish.
Lace up your hiking boots and off we go: from Ebernburg, a steep climb to the Rheingrafenstein castle ruins follows often dangerously narrow paths and seemingly endless steps. The view from up here is simply stunning. The Vitalweg continues on mostly challenging paths, constantly climbing and descending with repeated beautiful views in a wide arc to the Altenbaumburg ruins. Then it continues down through the natural forest and back to the starting point.
It was so nice. Simply a real panorama tour with great hiking trails that reminded us of our second home Mallorca. And in addition, the views and the historical background and of course a glass of Nahe wine, which should not be missing here, let this hike end great. More tomorrow 🙋♀️
A nice up and down on small paths. Great views. Beautiful area. And to finish off, eat well in the Spreitel inn
Oh yes, a real vital tour 😉 I found the tour with Angelika and saved it immediately 😊 I really wanted to see the red Rotenfels. We started with dreary high fog for a few KM through the forest, we chose the direction of travel specially, in the hope the weather would get better. The mossy forest needs sunny or humid weather, so it was a bit monotonous .. The second part of the tour is super nice, the fog got thinner and we were rewarded with a fantastic view of Altenbaumburg Castle, the path then winds through the forest (would be perfect with the MB) the absolute highlight then follows the view of Bad Münster, the Rotenfelsen, the Nahe and from the castle ruins Rheingrafenstein over the valley. We were so lucky, the sun came at exactly the right time in the right place, the colors were almost kitschy - unbelievable. As soon as we stepped down from the castle, fog began to gather again.
Start from the parking lot in Alsenz with many photo stops.
I have to admit that I got a bit of a hiking blues in January 🙈 Little time and bad weather meant that I rarely laced my hiking boots. That's about to change again, and to match that we went on a really nice tour in the Naheland. I finally breathe in the fresh scent of the forest again and hear the leaves rustling under my feet. It feels like coming home 😍💚🌳 The first panoramic views of the Naheland hills await us at the Altenbaumburg. But not only that, but also a cozy break with really delicious food is available for us here 😉 It appears almost at the end of our tour: The Rheingrafenstein. Big and mighty, he towers over the valley and the river. And from above we can admire the cities and countryside. Now the wanderlust is satisfied at least a little bit 😉
Today I decided to do the Vital Tour Rheingrafenstein. I've hiked a lot in the area, but today I was able to explore completely new paths. My conclusion: A fantastically beautiful hike. Here is the link to the Relive video: https://www.relive.cc/view/v1OwQEzgYXq
The circular tour impresses with beautiful views, two historical attractions with the two ruins of Altenbaumburg and Rheingrafenstein, and pristine nature at its best. I also took a short detour by ferry across the Nahe River to the Bad Münster Cultural Park. The tour is part of the "3x3 Salinental" hiking trail series around Bad Kreuznach, which advertises three tours of three different lengths/levels of difficulty, each. See: https://www.bad-kreuznach-tourist.de/aktiv-und-natur/wandern/3x3-salinental-wandern-um-bad-kreuznach/ Tomorrow we'll continue with the next tour...
