The route is generally classified as a moderate bike ride. While suitable for most skill levels, its length of nearly 60 km requires a good level of fitness. The elevation gain is minimal, making it more about endurance than steep climbs.
The trail is predominantly paved, with approximately 39.5 km of asphalt and 18.4 km of other paved surfaces. You'll encounter some very short unpaved sections (around 134 meters) and a small amount of cobblestones (1.34 km). Cyclists can expect to ride on roads, cycleways, and dikes.
You'll experience the expansive and tranquil vistas of the Groningen polder landscape, characterized by lush meadows. The route winds through the ancient Reitdiep area, considered the oldest cultural landscape in Western Europe. Expect picturesque villages, ancient churches, and views of the historic mound country. The Reitdiep waterway itself is a prominent feature, especially north of Garnwerd.
The route offers several interesting stops. You can see the Schaphalsterzijl Lock and Waterway, visit The Tea Factory Museum, and explore charming villages like Lauwerzijl, Ezinge Village and Canal (with its archaeological mound), and Feerwerd village. The entire Reitdiep area is notable for its 25 centuries of human habitation and water management history.
In autumn, large groups of lapwings and golden plovers can often be seen in the meadows, adding to the natural beauty of the polder landscape.
The trail is enjoyable throughout the warmer months. Autumn offers a unique experience with the chance to spot large groups of lapwings and golden plovers in the meadows. Always check local weather conditions before you go.
The trail largely follows public roads, cycleways, and dikes. While dogs are generally allowed in public spaces in the Netherlands, it's advisable to keep them on a leash, especially when passing through villages or near livestock in meadows. Always be mindful of local regulations and other cyclists.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to cycle this route. It follows public paths and roads through the landscape.
While specific parking areas are not detailed, you can typically find parking in or near the villages along the route, such as Groningen, Garnwerd, or Ezinge. Look for designated public parking spaces.
The city of Groningen serves as a major hub for public transport. From there, you can likely find bus connections to various villages along the Reitdiep, allowing you to start your cycling tour at different points. Check local transport schedules for the most up-to-date information.

Today it was time for a bike tour through the Hogeland. A very nice area for cycling; lots of water, beautiful avenues, fields and meadows, small villages and well-developed and landscaped cycle paths. In Holland, cyclists have priority over cars everywhere!
Today's tour took us from the berth in the port of Zoutkamp in the province of Groningen to the wonderful and very interesting Tea Museum in Houwerzijl, then to the pretty village of Winsum and back to Zoutkamp. Strong winds accompanied us the entire way... sometimes even as a tailwind!
