Singletrack Along the Heath

On December 15, the path along the heath was underwater, so that means wet shoes :p

Ruinen East MTB Route

Highlight (Segment) • MTB Park

This is one of my favourite loops; 21 km long (you only see a part of it here) and despite the few differences in altitude, there are still some nice sections of single track.

Henk Vlijm 🇳🇱🥾🚵🏻‍♂️🏊‍♂️
January 4, 2025, MTB route Ruinen Drenthe

MTB route Ruinen in the cold! Get up early to go to the beautiful Ruinen in Drenthe, a fresh start with a bit of frost. The surroundings Until more than seventy years ago, the area around Ruinen was 'wild and empty'. Undeveloped and often inaccessible land with peat, sand and vast heathlands. The mines in Limburg needed a lot of wood to support the mine shafts. That is why coniferous forests were planted in large parts of Drenthe in the crisis years of the 1930s: the fast-growing, straight trunks of the conifers were well suited to this task. Together with the 1,200 hectares of forests, the lakes and the sand form a wonderfully varied cycling and walking area. A few parts were not planted. For example, at the Gijsselter Plassen and the Echtenerzand you can still taste the atmosphere of the wild and empty Drenthe of almost a century ago. The MTB route The wide straight paths are very frequently alternated with nice single tracks, beautiful banked bends and a lot of twisting and turning, which makes it a nice course after all. There are no differences in height in the forest area, which makes the route very flat and you can really give the carbon steed the spurs. Occasionally a mud party, but that did not spoil the fun. Back at the bus, quickly turn on the engine/heater because the toes were still very cold.

Beautiful track, tires have good grip. There's always something to do. Left, right, a little up and down. Top

Given the amount of precipitation recently and even rain this morning, the drainage here is excellent. No puddles and minimal mud. Congratulations to the builders and maintenance. Little difference in height, but a lot of singletrack. Every now and then some straights, here you can take it easy or just sprint. Nice route to cross through the woods.
