On the Chuck Creek Trail to Samuel Glacier – Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park

Pure wilderness and breathtaking views await on the Chuck Creek Trail in the far north-west of the Canadian province of British Columbia. The Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park is the largest of British Columbia’s provincial parks.

The Chuck Creek Trailhead car park is on the Haines Highway. From here, you’ll set off along an old mining road beneath the impressive, 2,000-metre-high (6,600 ft) Nadahini Mountain. There’s nothing to obscure your view here, out across the treeless sub-alpine terrain. You’ll cross many streams, including two larger ones, so bring a pair of spare shoes if you don’t fancy doing it barefoot. At the end of the trail, a magnificent view of the Samuel Glacier awaits.

The inclines along the trail are moderate, totalling around 300 metres (980 ft) of elevation gain overall. However, covering the full 21 kilometres (13 mi) there and back does require a good level of fitness.

Tip: Keep an eye out for grizzlies in the valleys or on the mountain slopes – make noise to avoid any unexpected encounters.
