Hiking

This hike takes you from one of Canada's most popular photo spots, Moraine Lake, through a rare larch forest and up to stunning alpine terrain at 2,610 metres (8,563 ft) above sea level. A beautiful trail awaits, though it does get pretty challenging towards the end, so good quality hiking footwear is essential and poles may come in handy too.

The start point for this hike needs no introduction. Moraine Lake is known worldwide for its bright green water, staggering backdrop – it even adorns Canada's 20 dollar notes. The lake is so popular that the road leading up to it has been closed to cars, so you’ll need to take a shuttle bus from Lake Louise, which you should book in advance. You’ll find more information here: https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/parkbus/louise.

Take some time to enjoy the view across the water before setting off. The trail soon takes you away from the hustle and bustle and into an impressive larch forest. Steadily gaining height, you’ll soon reach the tree line, opening up a dreamy mountain panorama. A wide hiking trail leads to Minestima Lake, while the final 200 metres (650 ft) to Sentinel Pass are on a narrow, steep mountain path with rocky switchbacks. This final section requires both sure-footedness and a head for heights. From the pass, marvel at the fantastic view of Paradise Valley and the Valley of Ten Peaks.

Bear in mind that it can be cold and windy on the pass, even in summer. A hardshell jacket and warm layers are essential. During the warmer months, the area can also be declared a bear zone by the park rangers. When this is the case, hikers are only allowed on the trails in groups of at least four people. Find more information on the current status and trail etiquette here: https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/mtn/ours-bears/gestion-management/ours-bears/moraine.

Moraine Lake

Highlight • Lake

A bright blue lake against a spectacular mountain backdrop.
In this case: If you are in Banff National Park and you do not want to stop by, it's your own fault!

In the immediate vicinity of the lake is a larger parking lot and the road ends here. In the peak season and especially on sunny days, it can be scarce with parking.
There are also some lodges on this side of the lake and canoes can be hired. But not a really big tourist development such as Lake Louise.

On the small Rockpile at the end of the lake is a good path to go. From there you can enjoy a wonderful view.

Larch Valley

Highlight • Forest

The Larch Valley is a wonderful climb past streams, mountain lakes and the most beautiful peaks of the Canadian Rockies. It is particularly nice in late summer, when the needles of the larches, which are everywhere on the roadside, take on color and therefore form a color carpet of green, yellow and red.

Minestima Lake

Highlight • Lake

The ascent to Sentinel Pass starts at Minestima Lake. At the lake you can rest and refresh yourself before climbing the pass. When there is no wind, the mountain panorama is beautifully reflected on the mirror-smooth lake.

Sentinel Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Sentinel Pass, with its 2600 m of altitude, is one of the more challenging hikes in terms of fitness, although the paths and landscape are gentle and inviting. Surefootedness even through snow fields and small glacier passages is necessary, but can be mastered by most without any problems.
The Sentinel Pass is recommended for everyone, because the view, the scenery of the mountains, the clear mountain streams and lakes are worth every effort. Breathtakingly beautiful, fresh and windy - I have rarely seen the mountains so great, as from up here!
