Hiking

On the demanding tour to Großer Falkenstein (1,315 m), the path leads up through the Höllbachgespreng, a wild and romantic landscape with many small waterfalls and original mountain mixed forest. At the Falkenstein summit, a breathtaking view beckons, and just below, a cozy stop at the mountain hut. The descent is via the Ruckowitzschachten and the primeval forest area Mittelsteighütte.

Note:
In spring, the path in the Höllbachgespreng may be closed due to peregrine falcon breeding; in this case, please use the signposted detour.

Großer Falkenstein

Highlight • Summit

Many hiking trails of varying difficulty levels open up the hiking area around the Großer Falkenstein (1,315 meters). One of the most spectacular ascents is the path over the impressive Höllbachgspreng. For the somewhat difficult ascent, you are rewarded with a fantastic view from the summit – to the Großer Arber, the king of the Bavarian Forest, and over the National Park Bavarian Forest holiday region.

For less experienced hikers, easy-to-walk paths also lead up to the summit of the Großer Falkenstein with its artistic summit cross. And a stop at the inn is, of course, part of it too. ;-)

Here you will discover ancient tree giants and climb over thick roots and dead trees. The jungle area Mittelsteighütte is a true paradise for nature lovers. If you are patient, you can observe very rare birds such as the Hawk Owl or the White-backed Woodpecker here in the forest.

Trail Reviews

Jorgosh
September 8, 2025, Durchs Höllbachgespreng auf den Großen Falkenstein

A beautiful hike in the Bavarian Forest National Park. The section through the primeval forest of the Höllbachgespreng, in particular, allows hikers to experience the wilderness up close. However, the ascent here to the Falkenstein requires some fitness and surefootedness. Once at the summit, a stop at the Falkenstein Refuge offers the opportunity to replenish energy. The descent to Zwieslerwaldhaus leads along the Goldsteig trail and offers expansive views of the landscape, including the Grosser Arber.

It was a very nice and successful day with many nice people 😀🥾👍🏻☀️ I was very happy to meet you all in person 🥰 and hope to see you again on one or the other tour 🥾😀 @d̲̲_̲̲w̲̲_̲̲b̲̲ You are a great tour guide with your heart in the right place 😀 Respect for packing the two dumplings 😅

Very nice tour of Zwiesler Waldhaus to Falkenstein. You only have a view at the summit 1312m over to the large Arber. You should be reasonably sure-footed for the ascent on this tour. But there are also easier sections.

Today a wonderful tour with dear Komoot friends. Thanks to everyone for the nice conversations and the tour guide Giggerl for the great planning 😉👍

Due to roadworks, we had to reschedule our tour for today. We moved the tour forward for Wednesday. We went to Lindberg to the Zwieslerwaldhaus🅿️ (the upper 🅿️ is free). There's a fee to go up to the inn unless you're a vacation guest in the region. Now we continued steadily uphill on fairly wide paths. After about 3 km, we came to a narrow, overgrown section. Once we passed this, we were inspected. Of course, two of those beasts 🕷🕷 had used me as a taxi. When they didn't want to pay, I immediately dismissed them 🤣😂. The first highlight was the Triftteich (Trift Pond). It was beautifully situated. There were several places to sit and refresh yourself. There were also restrooms nearby. For me, the most beautiful section 🤩 now came. The path led over a rocky section to the Höllbachgespreng (Höllbach Gespreng). From there, there are two routes to the Grosser Falkenstein. We chose the left option.

Today our round trip took us to the Großer Falkenstein. We started in Zwieslerwaldhaus. We climbed over the Höllbachschwelle at the Höllbach waterfall over steep and rocky terrain to the Großer Falkenstein 🥵. In some places the path was a real challenge. At the summit we went to the Falkensteiner Schutzhaus for lunch - it was very tasty 😋. The descent took us on forest paths over the Ruckowitzschachten back to the car park.

Thanks to everyone for this wonderful day and you Stefan for choosing this great tour 👌🤘🙏😀 I was very happy ☝️
