The Eibsee circular trail is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is typically from May to October when the weather is mild, and you can enjoy activities like swimming and boating on the lake. During these months, the trail is fully accessible, and the vibrant colors of the lake and surrounding nature are at their peak. Winter offers a different, serene experience, but check conditions for snow and ice.
Yes, this trail is considered easy and is highly suitable for all fitness levels, including families with children and beginners. The path is generally flat and well-maintained, making it accessible even for strollers and wheelchairs with some assistance. It's a perfect half-day activity for a relaxed hike with stunning alpine views.
The main trailhead for the Eibsee circular tour is conveniently located near the Eibsee Hotel and the Eibsee Pavilion restaurant. There is a large paid parking lot available at the Eibsee. Public transport options are also available, connecting to the Eibsee area.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the Eibsee circular trail. However, as the trail passes through the Wildschutzgebiet Eibsee (Eibsee Wildlife Sanctuary), it is crucial to keep your dog on a leash at all times to protect local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Please also remember to clean up after your pet.
The trail features varied but generally easy terrain. You'll walk on well-maintained gravel paths, sections of forest trail, and some asphalt. The path is mostly flat with minimal elevation changes, making for a comfortable walk around the lake.
The route offers continuous panoramic views of the emerald-green Lake Eibsee and its islands, with the majestic Zugspitze often reflecting in the water. Key highlights include the Forest trail along Lake Eibsee, the Eibsee Bridge with View of Zugspitze, and various View of the Zugspitze from the Eibsee viewpoints. You'll also pass the tranquil Steingringpriel and the charming Kotbach Waterfall. The north side of the lake provides particularly unobstructed views of the Zugspitze.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Eibsee circular trail itself. However, parking at the Eibsee is subject to a fee. The area is part of the Wildschutzgebiet Eibsee, so please respect all local regulations regarding nature protection.
Yes, the route primarily follows the Eibsee Rundwanderweg, which covers 100% of the trail. It also briefly intersects with sections of the Thörle-Eibsee trail.
Yes, you'll find benches strategically placed along the route for rest. For refreshments, the Eibsee Hotel and Eibsee Pavilion restaurant are conveniently located at the beginning and end of the loop, offering places to eat and drink.
For some of the best views of the Zugspitze reflecting in the lake early in your hike, consider walking the circular trail in a clockwise direction. This allows you to enjoy these iconic vistas sooner. Also, arriving early in the morning can help you avoid crowds, especially during peak season.
Part 1: shopping in Garmisch Part 2: walk through Partenkirchen and then around the Eibsee.
Just a relaxed lap around the Eibsee. Unfortunately, we found that it doesn't matter when you go, there are always a lot of people there. But still a nice round. In winter I have to walk around almost normally.
Today was all about the circumnavigation of the Eibsee. Unfortunately we were denied the view of the Zugspitze, but the lake and the forest had a very special aura. Add to that the masses of water that tumbled down from the mountains... everything was so impressive.
Highly recommended even if some tourists were on the way
Today we did the typical Zugspitze tour: taking the cogwheel train to the Zugspitze plateau, taking the glacier cable car to the summit, and after a summit visit to the Golden Cross and a quick snack, taking the record-breaking cable car back down to Eibsee. I recorded the circuit; the elevation gain isn't accurate, but it would also be record-breaking. Then we took the train back to Garmisch. The pictures are from the entire tour.
After the Zugspitze there was still plenty of time, so we stopped at the Eibsee on the way back from Ehrwald (AUT). We had already seen the lake from the summit of the Zugspitze, shining turquoise. And indeed the lake sparkled in blue colors and allowed us to see the surrounding mountains again and again, with the Zugspitze being the most impressive of course. The path around the lake allows for dozens of such views, but rarely stays directly on the shore and there is a considerable difference in altitude of 40m on the south side of the lake. Great path, great tour.
Unfortunately the weather wasn't so good today and so we "only" went on the Eibsee Rundweg. It was worth it 👍🏼
Simple, beautiful round tour around the Eibsee. Counterclockwise. Family tour!
