A great place to get a photo of an old cart as a subject. Here you can also linger briefly and catch a glimpse of the mill village.

Trail Reviews

Andreas
October 19, 2024, Von der Dechenhöhle zur Burg Altena

This tour - from the Dechenhöhle to Altena Castle - was offered by the SGV Altena together with the Altena and Iserlohn city marketing departments. The meeting point was the car park at the Dechenhöhle. First, the Dechenhöhle was visited. Then it was off to the challenging 17 km long route. The weather was more or less good and the hiking group got together pretty quickly and had a lot of fun along the way. After arriving at Altena Castle, there was a final photo and most of us then took the bus (journey time 16 minutes) back to the starting point. Many thanks to the hiking guides!!👍🙋🏻‍♂️

Inspired by the brochure “Wandering in the Märkisches Sauerland”, thanks to the €9 ticket, we first took the S1 bus to the Dechenhöhle. This is where the newly built Burg Weg begins, recognizable by the hiking sign #Image1. First it goes from the Untergrüne about 4km uphill to the Schohelle, here you have a phenomenal view of the Ruhr area. The ascent after the country road is very hard, about just before it also goes off to Lössel. We continue over the Hilkenhöhe in the direction of Wixberg, which we partially circumnavigate. The next goal is the height at Hegenscheid Airport. From here the path follows the high-altitude flight down to the castle. We are no longer at the castle because our bus came at the Markaner 😉 Conclusion to the tour, very scenic with many beautiful shady passages. The marking of the path is a bit poor, at the beginning you can also follow the white circle, then until just before the Wixberg it is the X5 and a short time later the Sauerland Höhenflug. It is also scary to see the extinguished forest fire in the Hegenscheid area, where the hoses for possible subsequent extinguishing work are still lying. Image #17 and 18.
