This route was planned by komoot.
The trail is approximately 8.9 kilometers long and generally takes around 2 hours and 35 minutes to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the sights.
The Fritz Hornschuch Nature Trail is rated as moderate. You'll encounter a mix of paths, including some ascents and descents, with a total elevation gain of about 228 meters. The terrain is typical for Franconian Switzerland, offering varied natural surfaces.
The trail features several interesting sights. You can explore the Barrow cemetery in the Pfarrholz, enjoy views from the Fritz Hornschuch Nature Trail bench, marvel at the Steinerne Tor (Rock Arch) near Kasendorf, and take in panoramic vistas from the Sonnentempel Pavilion. Other highlights include the historic Magnus Tower, the Schuhmann Brewery Rock Cellar, and the Hercules Fountain of Kasendorf.
Given its moderate difficulty and varied points of interest, the trail can be suitable for families with older children who are accustomed to hiking. Younger children might find the full 8.9 km challenging, but sections could be enjoyed. Always assess your family's fitness level before embarking on the full route.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trail. However, as it's located within the Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz – Frankenjura, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through sensitive natural areas or near wildlife. Please also remember to clean up after your pet.
The trail is beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn are particularly recommended. In spring, you'll see wildflowers and fresh greenery, while autumn offers stunning foliage. Summer is also pleasant, though it can be warmer. Winter hiking is possible, but be prepared for potentially icy or snowy conditions.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Fritz Hornschuch Nature Trail or to access the Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz – Frankenjura. However, please respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and help preserve the natural environment.
While specific parking details aren't provided, trails in this region typically have designated parking areas near trailheads in towns like Kasendorf. It's advisable to check local signage upon arrival or use a navigation app to find the most convenient parking for the starting point.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Dr.-Fritz-Hornschuh-Naturlehrpfad, the Fränkischer Marienweg – Ave-Maria-Route, the Magnusweg RWF 64, and the Östlicher Albrandweg Lichtenfels - Thurnau (Teil 1). This offers opportunities to extend your hike or explore different paths in the region.
The trail passes through or near Kasendorf, where you can typically find local amenities such as restaurants, cafes, or guesthouses. The Schuhmann Brewery Rock Cellar in Kasendorf is one such local establishment you might encounter.
As a nature trail in Franconian Switzerland, you might encounter various local wildlife. Keep an eye out for common forest birds, small mammals like squirrels or rabbits, and possibly deer, especially during quieter times of day. The diverse flora also makes it interesting for plant enthusiasts.
Did this great tour in the sunshine today. Lots to see, great views and lots of information.
Very beautifully laid out and well-maintained nature trail. Good to walk at any time of year.
Oh, how beautiful autumn can be when the sun 🌞 has fought its way through the fog, then the deciduous forests🍂 shine in the most vibrant colors. You can enjoy this on the little walk around Kasendorf 😁
Park shortly after leaving Kasendorf at a signposted parking lot for hikers. The parking lot itself offers space for approx. 5 cars. However, there are some parking spaces in the village and in 5 minutes you are back at the starting point. We follow the Fritz Hornschuch hiking trail, which is well signposted. The tour itself is not difficult to do. Some rest areas / benches and tables invite you to have a snack. Unfortunately, the inns were all closed on the way. We hiked through wonderful deciduous forests, which certainly provide pleasant shade in high summer temperatures. The path is moderately steep uphill and offers beautiful views of the Kulmbacher Land or Kasendorf. If you want to make a detour to Zultenberg and the Görauer Anger, you can easily add that. The Görauer Anger is recommended due to its vegetation and the view. Was bivouacking there 2 years ago. The Felstentor near Kasendorf is easily accessible on the hiking trail, although not quite as impressive as the one in Bärental, it is still worth it. Back on the hiking trail we went to the deer jump. Unfortunately, or thank goodness, the vegetation and foliage of the trees were so thick that we couldn't see Kasendorf. Should be more interesting in autumn or in winter. From here the descent to Kasendorf and at the entrance to the village then up to the Magnusturm. The climb is worth it, a great panoramic view. Nice tour that we will definitely run again at a different time of the year.
Perfect weather, only the wildflowers aren't quite ready to bloom everywhere yet. If you're planning to drive, please use the parking area just before the village entrance when coming from Krumme Fohre. The narrow paths through the deciduous forests are easy to walk on right now and offer frequent views of the valley. At kilometer 3.6, it's best to stay on the road for the short stretch. The path through the woods is unfortunately quite limited. I also only managed to find the path to the rock gate on my second attempt. It took me a bit of effort to climb to the Magnus Tower. After climbing the 57 steps inside the tower, I was rewarded with a magnificent view!
Well, that was a great afternoon walk around Kasendorf with its many highlights. The Fritz Hornschuh path, which we mostly followed, is really great. The best thing of the day was of course that the orientation using the weather map worked out perfectly and we saw the heavy showers pass by from the Magnus Tower 😃
