Gordes is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France: true, but of course, crowded and somewhat "clean." It's therefore a good idea to add a circular hike to the "Village des Bories," the very interesting village of former dry-stone huts, and the Abbey of Notre Dame de Sénanque "from behind" outside the large parking lot—unfortunately, not yet in bloom.
Today we drove to the mountain village of Gordes. We had planned a circular walk. When we got there, there were masses of people and no chance of finding a parking space. We had already suspected it. At the very end of the town - we were lucky after all. We had to change our tour a bit, but that was OK. First to the Abbaye Notre-Dame Sénanque, a quick tour and snapping the picture that everyone wants. You can understand it. The view is simply amazing. Then we continued over a ridge, towards the museum village of Village des Bories. It was 🔥 ♨️ 🥵, the paths were sometimes very rocky, but still great. You can also torture yourself sometimes 😅. In between we passed a hideout of resistance fighters from the Second World War. They used this rocky outcrop as a hiding place when the Germans were looking for the wreckage of one of their planes. On to the museum village - tour - really well restored and interesting. Finally in Gordes, another delicious dinner.
Gordes boasts a truly imposing location on the southern edge of the Vaucluse Plateau, offering breathtaking views of the cliffs, meadows, and small villages in the valley. The highlight is a hike to the still-active Sénanque Abbey.
At noon we went on a hike. The starting point was the center of Gordes. From there it went over small trails, always along high stone walls, to the Abbaye de Sénanqué, a beautiful old Cistercian abbey, which is also famous for its lavender cultivation .. There are 400 of them in and around Gordes. At the end we looked at the beautiful center of Gordes with its many small, pretty streets. Gordes is a really small village perched on a rocky outcrop in the Monts de Vaucluse above the Calavon River.
