Trip to the three-lake region from Pfullendorf to Illmensee

Cycling

The P3 bike tour starts centrally at the market square in Pfullendorf and takes you through the diverse Three Lakes region. The route is of moderate difficulty, includes two steeper sections, but remains easily rideable thanks to mostly paved paths – ideal for active connoisseurs. Cycling is not permitted at the beginning, so you'll have to push your bike for about 70 meters. Then things really get going. Via Eichberg and Brunnhausen, you reach Burgweiler, where sights such as the Boundary Stone Museum, the historic crypt, and the diverse reed nature trail await you.

The tour continues towards Judentenberg. Here, you'll marvel at three mighty wind turbines before reaching the much-desired Three Lakes. First, Lake Ruschweiler awaits, followed by Lake Volzersee and finally Lake Illmensee. A break at Lake Illmensee is worthwhile. Whether you stop for a swim in the lakeside outdoor pool or refresh yourself in one of the inns, you'll find pure relaxation here. You can return to Pfullendorf via Denkingen in a relaxed manner.

Getting there is flexible: You can reach Pfullendorf by public transport, either by bus or train. The RegioBus line 500 is particularly convenient, or the seasonal Räuberbahn (Räuberbahn), which offers free bicycle transport. The starting and ending points are both close to the historic old town and are easily accessible.

Narrenbrunnen (Stegstrecker Fountain), Pfullendorf

Highlight • Monument

Pfullendorf is the "metropolis" of the upper Linzgau region. The town lies on a southwestern slope; the town center consists of the market square, surrounded by old half-timbered houses. This is also where the Stegstrecker fool's fountain, whose figures were sculpted by Peter Klink, stands. The old Bindhaus, which houses the local history museum, is worth seeing. The "Altes Haus" (Old House), the oldest house in southern Germany, is nearby, and the Oberes Tor (Upper Gate), a well-preserved city gate, is also not far away. There's much more to see and discover when you visit Pfullendorf.

Illmensee Bell Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

The legend of the Illmenseer bell

Before the Thirty Years War, Illmensee had a big bell with a splendid sound. When the Swedes came, the citizens sank their bell in the lake.

After the war, the community was completely impoverished. She had other worries, and the spot where the bell had sunk was forgotten. When, in better times, the people of Illmense remembered their bell, they couldn't find it.

One day a traveling scholar came to the village and offered to fetch the bell from the lake with the help of 30 men, whom he imposed absolute silence on. In fact, the bell was found. You were halfway out of the water by the time it struck noon.

One of the men said a prayer of thanks, others joined in and the bell sank back to the bottom. Since then, all searches have been in vain. Only on nights of the full moon can one hear how dark tones rise from the lake.
